So Cal vacation in July-what to do?

My wife and I are going to be in southern California on vacation July 5-13. Does anyone have ideas of what to do? Good restaurants, fun beaches, activities (kayaking, surfing, hiking, mountain bike trails with bike rentals nearby), theaters, shows, clubs, sight seeing. Anything we’ll wish we’d done when we think of it a week after the trip is over. Where should we go and where shouldn’t we go. We need your suggestions. Thanks.

If you dont have a good Comedy club near you, I would suggest one of the IMPROV comedy clubs in So. Cal which one depends on where in So Cal you will be.
I usually bring my KH29er with me when I go and get in a trail or two and maybe a ride around Huntington beach or Long beach while the wifey and daughter relax in the sand.
As for restaurants RUTH CHRIS STEAKHOUSE

if you’re near Santa Barbara, hook up with the SB Unicycle Club and go for a ride down there. It’s beautiful country down there.

If you happen to pass through truckee/tahoe area, the guys and i up here would love to get together for a ride.

come to san diego.

there are unicyclers here. and beaches. and resteraunts. and food. and unicyclers.

maybe iam going to rio de janeiro
lot of girls using bikinis on the beach
lot of sea food too

yyyeeehaaa

that’s all I heard from that sentence…

and frankly, that’s a good enough reason for me to go to rio!
:D:D:D

Thanks for the suggestions daytripper63. I guess I should have mentioned that I live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Unfortunately, we have a Ruth’s Chris steakhouse and I went to Zanie’s (like the Improv) on Feb. 17th and saw Greg Proops (who’s line is it anyway?).
Thanks also for offers to get together and uni and suggestions of where to uni. I don’t know if I’ll have a uni with me but we’ll see.

I still need more suggestions. Things to do and see that I can only do in Southern California. People in SoCal please respond. Where’s your favorite places? Where do you take friends that don’t know the area? If you had to leave SoCal what would you miss? I need to start making reservations soon and I want to be in the right spots. We’ll be flying in to San Diego on July 4th and getting a car. After that we can drive to wherever sounds fun until July 13th. Help!

Hit up venice beach and let your wife babysitt yourself along with a small handful of uni riders :stuck_out_tongue:

Or we can all ride at the beach and enjoy scenery…You can chat about democracy with fine erm gentlemen like bush here in chicago

Venice Beach sounds like a great idea and my wife would dig it too. I think she may have gotten her belly pierced there, I’ll have to check. Is Venice beach where you find all the “characters”, like a guy rollerblading while wearing a huge indian headdress?

HAHAHAHAHa if its a good day maybe, but there are a lot of vendors there and muscle beach is there, youl find some interesting clothed figures lol.

Where else should we go. What towns should we see. Hiking, biking, surfing?

For surfing, hit San Onofre Surf beach in San Onofre State Park, a little ways North of San Diego. It’s a nice spot to learn, re-learn or just enjoy a great SoCal beach. If you’re a beginner rent a ~9’ soft top longboard anywhere nearby (there’s lots of surf shops) and go crazy.

If you meander up to Los Angeles:

Visit Huntington Gardens & Library in Pasadena - that’s a “must see” in SoCal. And while you’re in Pasadena, check out the Norton Simon Museum, the Caltech campus, Eaton Canyon and Old Town Pasadena. That’s more than you can fit in a single day.

If you visit Venice Beach, its connected to Santa Monica, so you might as well visit both - its an easy walk. They’re definately a great place to see…interesting…people. And there’s a small amusement park on the Santa Monica Pier.

You can hike or bike in the Angeles National Forest - get maps and passes at any Sport Chalet in LA County. For rentals, I can’t really suggest anything, but I’m sure you can find a place with a little Google searching.

If you’re into it, the Walk of Fame in Hollywood is a good one-time visit. You could see a movie at the Chinese Theatre or the El Capitan, watch some street performers and visit the mall at Hollywood & Highland.

Might as well suggest the La Brea tar pits, too. They constantly dig prehistoric fossils out of there, and it’s in the middle of downtown Los Angeles!

There’s also Catalina Island via the Catalina Express. That’s good for a day or two as well.

PM me for more suggestions.

The La Brea Tar pits aren’t in downtown but they are in the middle of the city. They are also right next to LACMA which is the city’s main art museum. It’s free everyday after 5PM and open until 8PM.

And if you like Art/Architecture visit the Getty. It’s free admission but parking is $7.50.
