Ska

Ive been listening to some ska lately and I really like it. Any suggestions of some good ska bands worth giving a listen to?

Real ska, the Jamaican music from the 50s, or fake new-wave ska like Reel Big Fish?

All of them, then you decide which ones you want to keep or delete.

Torrent time! :stuck_out_tongue:

Fake.

Dont hate me.

I like the fake new wave ska.
Like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones is my favortie ska,
less than jake streetlight manifesto reel big fish are good and others i cant rembere. Go to Pandora and type in the name of a band you like and it will play similar bands. I really enjoy pandora.

the aquabats
mustard plug

Marcel and his Orchestra.

oops forgot one.

pannonia all-star ska orchestra

It’s cool dude man, new ska is sweet too, it’s just not real ska (:
Reel Big Fish and Five Iron Frenzy…and Aquabats.

Big D & The Kids Table.

I don’t really like ska that much but I listen to it from time to time.

I’d be willing to check out some “real” ska if you give a few names or links.

i used to love ska.

but dont you know ska is dead?
haha…

nah i will still throw on some streetlight or some skankin pickles every once in a while

Is it just me or do unicyclist tend to like a bunch of the same things? I need to get me some ska stuff.

check out the specials, they’re 2nd wave, so not “original” ska but pretty amazing none the less

Sometimes new ska is fun, but the original ska is waay better

The Skatalites is the only “original” ska band that comes to mind…I don’t listen to it much honestly, I listen to reggae more, which evolved from ska in the first place, so it’s similar.

Yaay, one point for reggae:)

The Planet Smashers! I think they’re technically “new” ska, but they go less for punk influences, unlike LTJ or Big D (actually, Big D is on the same Stomp label that was started by Matt Collyer of the Planet Smashers). They’re really, really good.

Bedouin Soundclash is pretty good, Edna’s Goldfish if you can find them (they disbanded several years ago).

Ska is ska. it’s not real or fake. It just happens to show up in waves. I think The Specials in the late 70’s, early 80’s were more influential to modern ska/punk bands than the pioneers like Desmond Dekker or the Skatalites.

There’s a great interview with Bob Marley on youtube where he describes the differences between reggae, ska, and dancehall, and how they were all born out of calypso.

My favorite Ska influenced band is The Suicide Machines. Their first 2 albums, Destruction by Definition and Battle Hymns are spectacular. Also, if you haven’t heard Operation Ivy, you need to get with it. They’re re-releasing the digitally remastered Energy LP, so there’s no excuse to not have it.

And by mentioning Op-Ivy, you made me realize I’d forgotten that and Rancid! DOH!
