I am looking for a new tire for my Schwinn unicycle. It says Unicycle on the
side and the size is 20 X 1 3/4 with S-7 tubular on it. The LBS is trying to
sell me a regular 20 X 1 3/4 tire but I want the correct type. The ones at the
store seem very narrow compared to the tire I am looking for. Any help would be
appreciated. Please respond via newsgroup. thanks

Unfortunately, Those old “Unicycle” tires haven’t been made since the early
1980’s. The problem with the Schwinn S-7 rim is it’s proprietary size. In other
words, a 20 x 1.75 tire is not the same as a 20 x 1 3/4 tire. Hey, I didn’t make
this stuff up…
There are still tires out there that fit the old S-7 rims, but they may be hard
to find. Try older bike shops, or ones that keep a lot of old inventory. Beware
the old Schwinn tires. They were long-lasting, but that was because they were
hard. You could write your name on a gym floor with one.
Another option is to get a newer rim, allowing you to use all the common BMX
tires of the present. This isn’t the best of solutions either, because then you
have to find a 28 hole rim, which is usually relegated to lower-end cheap stuff,
or higher-end racing stuff that’s light but not strong.
Don’t worry if your tire says to inflate to 40 lbs on the side (the old Unicycle
tires said 60). You can still put plenty of air in there, as long as the tire is
properly seated on the rim.

I had the same problem with an ultimate wheel I built. I think it was a S-7, but
I’m not really sure. I went to a Schwinn dealer and they said that they could
special order it. I never ended up doing it but I would say your best bet is to
talk to a Schwinn dealer. You definitely want to get the right tire, schwinn’s
old rim type was purposely made to not fit standard tires.
