Schlumpf hubs: general discussion

I’ve been waiting since April 11, 2011. My first hub took around 3 months to arrive (last year). So I am not overly surprised.

Here’s some evidence :D:

That should be enough for all of you :stuck_out_tongue:

I think I’ve read on this forum that a big bearing was loose on aluminum shell side, my understanding is that holes to lighten aluminum shell are too large and bearing thight fit cannot be enought

Thanks, Hugo.

Now I have to go and change my underwear.

I think I see my hub, it’s in the line of four completed hubs, third from the end

A pic like that could almost be classed as unicycling porn!!

LOL! I knew it would have some “effect”. Glad that Florian allowed to take pictures.

2nd

I am just about to order my second schlumpf for my KH36 (the first is on my KH29)… maybe its in that pile???

Probably.

Hubba Hubba!
Tens of thousands worth in that pic alone!

and dollars

Yah I an starting to get some play at the big bearing on the left (downshift) side of my hub. I will have to give Florian a yell to see what is considered acceptable and how it can be fixed. Don’t really want to send my hub away, especially with a postal strike going on right now.

Big bearing play

Hey Sas,

I’ve had play on this bearing for a while, and a few other people have as well. Florian said it’s a relatively easy fix, but i’m hesistant to touch my hub in fear of voiding warranty, so I have left it alone, am keeping my hub well lubed, and the play hasn’t gotten noticeably worse in the last 6 months or so.

If it were to really get loose (at the moment it’s about 3-4mm of play) then I would consider sending it back to Florian, but for now I’m living with it, as it’s only really a hassle when I get brake rub when cranking it up hill.

Cheers,

Dmac

Mine broke

I’m looking for advice or suggestions. My hub “failed” at mile 76 of my century ride on June 12. It sounded like rocks snapping between frame and spokes for a second, and I was dumped off (fortunately I was barely moving). The wheel was locked. It will turn freely for a bit, then lock up again. Either gear.

Is there anything I can do, or should I go straight to dismantling my beautiful SilvaCycles wheel and shipping the hub to Florian?

John,
It sounds like the planetaries failed. The hub will have to be sent back to Florian. I hope mine will return soon. I broke a shift shaft on the 1st of May. Florian said that is the first time a hub has been returned for a broken shift shaft.
Building up 36er wheels aren’t too bad. I am getting proficient at it. I use the frame as a truing stand. My Schlumpf wheel build was tighter and truer than my stock Nimbus Nightrider. It took me about 2 hours the first time. I think it will be quicker this time around.
Good luck. I feel your pain. I miss my hub. I have been using my Nightrider since my hub has been sent back.

Bummer deal, that definitely sounds like a fatal failure unfortunately. At least it kept you from having to ride another 24 miles.

Haha, I think he went home and got another uni from what he posted elsewhere.

Hi John,

You could always take it apart and try to fix it yourself. It sounds like something broke, so you may end up having to machine a new part for it and repair the damage to other components.

All thing considered, I would ship it back to Florian.

Scott

I am a fairly mechanically enclined guy and am pretty sure I can fix it myself with a bit of tinkering but am hesitant to do anything that might void the warrantee, Etc. I love the hub but with this new source of play I have been finding it much more enjoyable to use one of my unGuni wheels instead.

John, no quotation marks required, your hub failed. Glad you survived.

Yes, I was very lucky in the timing. I had just met Jacquie for lunch (or second lunch, as the Hobbits would call it). She drove off, and I went to head back onto the bike path. Pedaled about three cranks, through some rough gravel, and it broke. So she was only a few minutes away!

We went back to the house, where I would grab my old Coker and take off to finish. But it was still set up for Zack Baldwin’s ride in the Auburn Crit. Low seat and no handlebar! I had to swap the seatpost, find the handle, re-attach the brake mount thingie, etc., which took about 45 minutes of sweatiness, before I could go and finish my longest riding day…

Uh, how about no. Though last week I did take apart a brand new 27" iMac and replace the hard drive. But this was only with a detailed set of instructions with pictures! And even then, this Mac was newer than the one depicted, so it didn’t all match and I had to improvise. But I’m writing on it right now…

Fortunately I was going about 1 mph when this happened, giving a couple of extra hard cranks through the big gravel of a RR crossing. I doubt it would break like it did under normal load, so the chances of it locking up while someone is cruising are very slim.

Thanks for all the advice! I’ll have to get it boxed up for Florian. I don’t want to tamper with his precision machine, and will be interested to find out what happened in there…
