You can tell the builder of this new one has been thinking. Unlike Eric Kolb’s
recumbent, this one has a chain guard. Every time you drop it (which should be
a lot, even for a unicyclist), the chain would otherwise hit the ground. Also
he’s got a wheelie bar in the back, to keep him from going dangerously over
onto his head.
Though a lot more comfortable, I still don’t know about the practicality of
recumbent unicycles for long rides. You can gear them up, and sip a soda while
riding, but they will never be easy to steer, due to the flattened-out position
of your body. But they certainly turn heads! I used to get lots of requests for
information on Eric’s recumbent. I wish I had gotten more time to play on it,
back at UNICON VIII…
