Sorry I have been so slow in getting to this but I have not been in touch with
Duncan Castling and as he invented the name “Muni” thought I should really get
the definitive answer from him. He says it is said “MUENI” (that u has an
umloute on it!), the problem with saying it “Moonie” which is the easy way is
the connection with the moonie church. The new pashley moutain unicycle from
Pashley might be called the Muni (Duncan has developed it).

In San Francisco, the bus/trolley/cable car system is called the Muni, short for
municipal railway, and it is pronounced myoonie (by the people, man). No higher
authority declared that it would be so, that’s just the way it is.
