Really? I was not aware of this. Being a “founding father” myself in a couple of countries
I am very curious about how you started unicycling in Israel. I taught Rami Yanai (email
on ccline) maybe 15 years ago in Japan and sometimes go to Israel and do a little unicycle
promotion, and there were big articles in some major dalies and magzines at one time of me
riding in Tel Aviv. I have also been on contact with Oded and Rami over the years and offered what
little help I could.

Please tell us your story of you started unicycling in Israel.

I join you in offering my congratulations. I have been in contact with Oded, and we were
hoping for an Israel Team at Ubicon XI. Oded, you did tell me that you plan to get a team
organized for Unicon XII, right? So far I have always been the only Israeli at all Unicons.

Jean, when will you come to a Unicon?

BTW, unicycle in Hebrew is KHAD-OFAN. The “KH” is a harsh gargling sound harder to
produce than to ride a unicyle

Re: Re: Fwd: Israeli Unicycling society (or organization or center)

Ahhh, now I have to go to Unicon 12 to watch the Uni Summo Tourny for the title of The Father of Israeli Unicycling. I wonder who taught thies guys to ride? The Father of the Father of Israeli Unicycling? Grand-Uni? Spontanious generation?

Now I have to wrestle Lewis for the Pa of Missippi’ Unicycli’n title. Great.

Are Palestinians welcome to join?

Why not? A Palestenian woman was spectator at the Unicon in Germany.

Re: Fwd: Israeli Unicycling society (or organization or center)

I have been selling a steady stream of unicycles to Israel over the last
year. We also have a professional entertainer in the UK who travels to
Israel every few months and always takes a unicycle with him but returns
without one. From what I can tell all these riders are not part of a club.
If there is a club/organisation set up I will direct them towards it.

Thank you for this interesting and impressive story. I know about your activities
but was not aware of their extent.

I think there is a misunderstanding here. I never in my wildest dreams would claim to be the founding
father of unicycling in Israel. When I said “a couple of countries” I meant Japan and China
because the title “founding father” is used by some people in Japan in China when referring to me.

Anyway, power to you for the great work you have done!

Interesting! Do you have any unicycling contacts among Israeli Arabs or Palestenians?
I once taught some Arabs in Haifa to ride and would be happy to teach to Palestenians
as a means of cultural exchange to promote peace. I love the Arabic language.

I assume you know about the Hebrew unicycling website at http://www.unicycle.org.il/.

Re: Fwd: Israeli Unicycling society…

I knew that name was familiar.

For those with access, on page 13 of the April 1999 issue of On One Wheel there is a photograph and blurb about Jean Ascher and the Cirkus ChangHigh. They also have a(n) (amazingly difficult to navigate) website: http://users.cybercity.dk/~dko4700/circus_changhigh_english.htm

Re: Re: Fwd: Israeli Unicycling society (or organization or center)

Gosh- I’d hate to repeat what some people in Mississippi call me. blush

My Japanease unicycle origin history is bad; mostly, it is based on comments from friends -that are now in their 30’s-40’s- that they learned to cycle in grade/middle school. What constatutes being the one who ‘planted the seed of unicycling in Japan’? Maybe I’m mischaracterising the title; perhaps it’s more like the relationship of Evil Knievel to contemporary Moto X Freestyle- I don’t know. I could use the education, and the story would round out this thread nicely.

Here is some history from MYS:

MYS Corporation was established in 1975. Mr. Koji Sugano and Mr. Hiroshi Masuda, the founders and representative directors, started Japan Unicycle Club with Mr. Jack Halpren in order to popularize unicycle as a new sport the first time in Japan and began their actions to popularize unicycle throughout Japan. The Club was approved and authorized in 1989 from the Ministry of Education as The Corporation Japan Unicycle Association (Nihon Ichirinnsha Kyokai) and the unicycle has been nationwide school physical education program. Up to now, the unicycle has spent over the 95% of all of 24,000 elementary schools in Japan. Now, 8 million of the elementary school children can ride unicycles. The unicycle athletic competitions and events open 40 places all over Japan every year under different categories such as race, performance, marathon, long distance relay race (Ekiden), and others.

Wow. Imagine, 95% of the elementary school population being able to cycle… amazing achievment in only 14 years. Was that from a flat-footed start, or was there already some presence of cycling in the schools? Going back further, what was it like for unicycling in general back in 1975? Was Miyata pumping out cycles at that time?

Interesting subject- to me at least!

Hey, i’m going to Jerusalem this Christmas and am taking my trials Uni. It might sound like a stupid question but what are the main problems that could present themselves through my uniing there? I’m going with/ staying with some missionary friends who run a school there, so in terms of receiving culturally sensitive advice there should be no problem, but i was just wondering if anyone had any advice?

Here something interesting – ride through the markets of the Old City, rough
cobblestone with donkeys and barefoot kids running arounf among the tourists
(or whatever is left of them) and shouting shopkkepers on incredibly narrow streets.
