I’m not a hardcore unicyclist either
I guess if you‘re doing tricks, trial or muni it‘s quite the core workout (my only experience is muni, and after such a ride I usually feel my soft belly muscles).
If you just casually ride, it‘s not much of a workout, particularly if you are more experienced rider who doesn‘t move his upper body more than absolutely needed.
I haven’t done as much muni as I wished to, but I never felt it solicited my core strength very much Thighs, however…
f-bounce:
Yes thighs are worst, despite my muni having a brake. That said, last time I rode a certain sledge trail I only had sore thighs for less than two days, whereas two months ago it was three days (and a shorter distance). So I‘m either getting fitter, or better at relying on the brake - or both
As I approached a young woman on a trail heading the other way she said “You’re amazing.” a little louder than average. She paused a moment and as I was about to pass her “Sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that.”. Which sounded odd since she hadn’t yelled at me and it wasn’t negative at all.
I replied “All good. Unicycles get me excited too.” as I continued on.
That was a great reply of yours
As I was walking over to the skate park, a kid laughed to his friends saying, “Is that a f**king unicycle!?” talking about me. Though I couldn’t quite understand why a person looking like they were 14 years old was making fun of my unicycle when he was wearing a Minecraft hoodie, I wouldn’t be surprised if he zipped up the hoodie and it had a creeper face on it. No joke, this is an acurate photo of my assailant…
I’ve seen many on here question the value of core exercise and unicycling. Trust me, it’s one of the best ways there is of strengthening your core.
I think the only comment I’ve ever had wrt core strength and unicycling was from a physio: “Your core must be amazing.”
I read: „…from a psycho“
Hope your physio wasn‘t a you-know-what.
From a small child: “He’s riding a trick thing.”
„Is this dangerous?“
„As long as you‘re riding it, no. But when you‘re falling…“
Girl in a princess costume, holding a magic wand: “How can you ride that?”
Me (arriving at my goal): Jumps off and let Uni fall to the ground. “I can’t!”
Girl: Waves with magic wand. “I enchant it so that you will not fall off!”
Me: “Will your enchantment work also tomorrow?”
Girl: “Yes! You will have to practice a lot - Then you will not fall off!”
At the skatepark a couple of days ago. Its was a busy day, so I got a lot of the standards, but a couple intelligent comments that actually surprised me.
Older BMX rider- "How on earth do you ride those things?! points to the wheel
Me- I began explaining my regular learning to ride monologue
Older BMX rider- interrupts me “No no, I know the concept of riding a unicycle. I was talking about your cranks! They’re so f***ing short!”
We had a little chuckle about it while I explainded why shorter cranks work well for what I’m doing on one wheel.
Another good moment came from a guy around my age. He was there with his wife and two kids. The kids were actually pretty decent scooter riders, doing some decent tricks around the park.
I could tell he’d been watching me and chatting with his wife and kids, I didn’t really pay much attention to him though.
About 20 minutes later he finally comes up to me,
Him- “Hey can I ride that? They dont believe me that I can ride a unicycle. points to his wife and kids”
Me- “Yea sure, give it a shot.”
I hand him my uni, expecting a sloppy mount on a rail or my shoulder followed by a few revs and a UPD. Much to my surprise, he freemounted, rode a quick circle around his family, paused, idled a few times and rode backwards for multiple revs before pausing again and dismounting under control. I was a bit astounded. He handed my uni back to me, points to his wife and goes, “I told you!”.
Before I had a chance to approach him ask him some questions they were all walking towards their car and leaving the park. I hope to see him again so we can talk some more.
One of the handful of people I’ve met that can ride a unicycle is somebody I met at a skate park fundraiser They were probably the most skilled one I knew. I actually let them test ride my 36er after seeing them ride on my 20" uni!
Once I was riding home from school and a mom said: “I used to ride as a kid.”
I thought that was cool, as I’ve never really met any other riders.
I think there are many people who are (more or less) able to ride a unicycle because they learned it as a kid. I recently found out that this was the case with three of my cousins.
Or, last summer an acquaintance asked if she could try out my 20er. I said „sure“, handed it to her while silently getting a little desperate after realising that I‘ll have a hard time to help her because she was way heavier than I. Fortunately she just needed some assistance to mount (which mainly came from a pole, and to some extent from me), then she was able to ride around. I was relieved and surprised, while at the same time feeling guilty for having prejudged her.
Long story short: many people seem to have learned to unicycle as a kid but then abandoned. When given the opportunity, chances are that many of them still can do basic riding. So you may well met other (non practicing) unicyclists, you just didn‘t know it.
Just curious, what length are your cranks?
I’ve got the stock 118mm cranks on my Impact Sylph. But considering that he was riding 165’s I imagine that mine looked crazy to him.
“Is that a new wheel?” - Somebody said as I rode by
Not the first time I was asked that question… “Local Unicycle Guy” status achieved
