Quote of the day (from non-riders)

The other day I came out of a trail on my trials uni (I don’t own a muni yet), and when some bikers saw me one of them said “I have 29” wheels, suspension, and gears and I can barely make it through this trail. You just have that–I give up!"

While out riding around my community I mostly receive positive feedback, like, “that’s awesome”. Last week I heard a girl exclaim, “he’s old.”

Today I participated in a community ride, just under 20 miles. Lots of opportunities for postive conversations about unicycle riding, and lots of postive feedback. (I was the only unicycle rider among several hundred participants.)
My favorite comment was (naturally) a yound lady exlaiming “That is the coolest thing in the world!”

I was on my 24" the other day, training for the Unicon “standard” 10 km, so naturally spinning quite fast. I was passed by a bicyclist who remarked “Wow! You should have some gears on that to go even faster”.

(I replied “Yeah, I wish I had”. But really I didn’t wish that, because it wouldn’t be allowed as a standard unicycle.)

It sounds like “some idiot on a cell phone on the freeway is holding up traffic” would be a more accurate description.

Klaas Bil’s one reminds me, I recently got “you should get one with gears” - I think my “I do” was probably lost on them (though not quite as good as the time I got told I needed gears by a bicyclist who’d been riding behind me as I changed gear on the Schlumpf)

I would love to do that one day! “Ha, you need gears on that thing!” shifts up BOOM!

Supposedly Schlumpf’s make quite a noise when they shift too, so it’d be pretty obvious what I just did

A bunch of teenagers in the local park shouted ‘faggot’ and ‘prick’ whilst I rode my 36er.
There are times after receiving such narrow minded comments when I wonder if I should just wear a neon sign saying ‘verbal abuse please’.

I did, however, get a nice “that’s amazing” from a woman later on which more than made up for it

My 11 year old son was riding home the other night. He tells me that some young kid yelled out, “Hey, does that hurt your nuts? Do you have to wear a cup?”

My son has only been riding for a couple years and has yet to hear all the inane questions that will come. He didn’t know what to say, so he just said “no” and rode off.

We laughed for a long time !!!

The correct response is along the lines of “no, I have balls of steel.” Better is, “why do you have such an interest in my balls?”

From a late teen guy, trying with varying degrees of success, to carry a skateboard and a six pack of beer while pushing his bike:
“You can do that! Like you must be fifty and you are so fit you can do that. Man, you are going to live forever.”

While on a twenty mile ride on a local rail-trail I heard an interesting comment from a guy who said, “now that’s practical”. What do you suppose he meant by that?

Have done this one before, but it’s one of my favourites, so worth repeating.

~12yo boy out with extended family: “How do you do that?”
Me: “Magic”

…worth repeating as I got a great reaction from everybody (I also had a big grin)

Best compliment I’ve heard in quite a while:

From a woman passing me on a road bike while going uphill; who looked to be in her mid-60s to mid-70s:

“You rock.
You rock hard.”

Love it!

Had 2 people in one day ask if i was riding a tri-cycle?

I said does it look like i got 3 wheels? Lol

No words, but a kid was just staring at me, jaw-dropped. Literally. Mouth agape. Eyes wide open. I know it’s not new, but I don’t get those every day that I know of. Just stood there for seconds like that, even after I made eye contact. I was not doing anything fancy.

Also, I’ve gotten a few instances of “you’re killin’ it” or “kill that thing” or the like from different people at different times/places. I hope that’s a good thing. It sounded like praise of my command of the machine, rather than anything to do with damaging it.

Young child shouts…" Look! a one wheel wheelie." Clever kid, I thought, as I rode past.

Kid asked me yesterday “How do you stand on that thing?”. I said “I just do but it took practice”. Next time, I will say “by magic” as suggested, it’s probably the best and most honest answer!

I rode my 29er muni across town to watch my wife play in her tennis league. As I was leaving, a young guy on a too-small bmx bike slammed on his brakes and stopped at the corner. He said “You ride that like a boss, Dude!”

He then hung his head and said, “I tried that before but I gave up.” I encouraged him with, “You are never too old to learn. You should try again.”

He muttered something unintelligible as he pedaled away. Maybe he’ll try again…

Or go smoke a bunch of pot. Wait, is that stereotyping?
