I can’t remember the last time I got the “You lost your other wheel” comment. But I got two today within about 2 miles while riding my 36er at lunch today. To both comments I replied “That’s original.” After I replied the second time I chuckled to myself because of the irony… ![]()
On my last MUni ride heading up the jeep track on my way to the single tracks passed a runner on his way down the jeep track. Saw him look at me and as he went past he said “Nice Wheel” with a smile. Was a refreshingly new comment. Unfortunately all I could say was “Thanks a lot” with my own smile ![]()
Isnt that always so true. I usually feel thrown off balance when somone says something nice, its so unexpected. Its hard to throw in a good comeback when they are actually nice people…
I happen to think that a smile and a ‘Thank you’ is a particularly stunning comeback.
I did a ride in the rain the other night and was pleasantly surprised when a group of kids having a smoke outside the video rental store were actually quite pleasant. I stopped for a minute to chat and they asked reasonable questions like:
Is that difficult?
How long have you been riding?
Does it hurt?
etc…
I was caught completely off guard and was expecting heckles instead. It was a nice way to finish my ride.

Today, I got a wolf-whistle from some guy, which is a little weird but still strangely refreshing, and later in my ride a “Aww HELL NAW! What are you doing?!”. It sounded like he was struggling to come up with something witty to say, so I guess I forgive him.
Some guy told me today, “just don’t chew any gum while you’re riding that thing!”
I don’t really get it…maybe he thinks unicycling takes so much concentration that chewing gum would cause my brain to overload???
I think it’s constantly correcting how forward and backward you are, it might make the gum fly out of your mouth or fly back down your throat.
Thanks GILD
Been getting more positive comments lately in the Forest from the MTB’ers. Probably because I’m there quite often so they are getting used to seeing me.
your not blond are you?
there was a blond joke in the 90s about blonds being unable to walk and chew gum at the same time.
I don’t remember the beginning so sorry for giving away the punch line ![]()
I’d originally thought it was said by, or of, Winston Churchill, a little googling later and it seems to have an American origin?
No I’m not blond.
I’m sorry I was only 6.5 years old when the nineties ended, so I wouldn’t remember these things. ![]()
Thanks for clearing things up GILD.![]()
The other day I passed some teenagers on the street and they came out with the usual circus jingle… the big irony was that they had some skateboards but unfortunately I didn’t think to pull out the Uni magazines from my bag and show them the street unicycling pics.
Yes, it’s a common joke in terms of people saying they can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. So for a bystander to come up with that as you approached is a pretty good one! I like it.
“Skill” as a cyclist passed me this morning. I was only my 36er.
Much better than the two chavs last week who shouted that next time they saw me they would run me off the road. Pleasant.
ive lost count of the amount of threats chavs give me, but some how they never come to anything.
Was it jealousy because your 36er had a wider tyre than his Vauxhall Corsa?
He-he:D, probably more horsepower too.
Nice one!
ok this isn’t so much a quote as it is a reaction that i’ve been noticing over time.
apparently failed unispins look like they hurt a lot worse than they do. at my local skatepark the other night i was warming up and on my first 3spin attempt i was trying to land seat in, so i wasn’t anticipating stopping the uni with my hands so much as i was with my legs. when i got in the air the seat got squirly and i ended up landing sif not being prepared for such a thing i landed on the left pedal but the uni kept spinning so my right foot slipped off the pedal. i stepped hard onto my right foot and leaned far over the uni as it shot out from under me. the 4 people that were watching me ride in unison, all went “OHHH!”. the fall didn’t hurt at all, but apparently it looked painful/impressive. i’ve had this happen before with even simpler failed spins and just think it’s funny that people see every fall from the uni as severe.
has anyone else experienced weird reactions, or overly dramatic reactions to falls?
Got a predictable reaction tonight from an unpredictable source. We were near the University of Minnesota waiting on people to arrive for a trials ride. A little girl asked, “Are you from the circus?” We get that from time to time from smart-aleck teenagers, but this was a girl who appeared to be about 4 years old and seemed to be quite serious.
I decided it was a serious question and gave it a polite reply. She asked a lot more thoughtful questions which I also answered. She seemed to be satisfied and went about her business.
