Quote of the day (from non-riders)

I’m not http://bicycleman.com/
I teach physics and Astronomy and Science in Science Fiction. There are three students that ride unis, two sophomores and a senior. There are some kids in town who ride too.

With the Bicycle Man in town, people around here are used to seeing weird bikes.

I haven’t had any comments yet, but I went for my first proper ride today (I’ve only been riding for 2 days so far). I only went for a short ride to the bike shop to get some shin pads, but I was surprised at how many people just sat there like :astonished: as I rode past.

I may have made this response before, but it’s still fun to say…

As I’m approaching a couple of hikers, one of them alerts the other that I am about to pass, and says:

“Here comes a bike!”

And as I pass by I reply, “You’re half right!”

silly kids…

a few kids were playing with their nerf stuff… ran over to me as i was crossing the parking lot… asked me “Is that easy ?” and before i could open my mouth they turned and ran away. I figured they’d have been just a touch more intruiged… odd.

First thread post of 2009

A guy walking his dog told me “that’s some special talent” while I was riding downtown. It seems that almost every dog I encounter, they are deathly afraid of the unicycle.

The other day I was riding the local bike path for the first time in a long time. It was a beautiful Sunday morning and there were tons of bikes out on the path. One of them came up with something I don’t remember hearing:

“Is that all the thieves left you?”

With little time as they passed me I came up with this:

“No, I got rid of all the useless stuff.”

That was good for a laugh from them.

Hiker: “Nice bike you have there!”

Me: “It’s a unicycle. A bike has two wheels”

Hiker: “Oh, then I must be seeing double! …that’s the last time I mix my drinks and go hiking!” :stuck_out_tongue:

as i was riding Muni on a single track I UPDed and stood there panting trying to regain my breath, so the other munier with me continued along the path… then a MTBer appeared and told me “oh! I just met your front wheel!”

^^^Haha.

The other day i was teaching my 8 year old sister to ride on my 16". She couldn’t to commit to more than 1 rev so i told her to “grow some balls” and then she said, “but that would hurt more”

old man- “wheres your other wheel?”
me- “he’s got it” points to kieron
old man- “what?”
me- “we’re sharing, its more economically friendly!”
Kieron- “we’re reducing our carbon foot print!”

hehe

Today when someone said ‘look, it’s a bike!’ I used the ‘well your half right’ comment.

The best quote of the day was as I was riding through a busy street was:

‘Wow! your that guy off youtube’

…because I got featured recently. Check out the video in the signature if you haven’t already seen it. It’s in the top 10 most watched unicycle videos of all time now.

HOW did you get it featured? Is the music on your video copyrighted and owned by you? From what I heard, YT will never feature any videos that infringe on copyright. Congrats on getting featured. It makes a HUGE difference in how many views you get that’s for sure.

I love how someone can spend so much time and effort making a fantastic, entertaining and creative video, but only get a few hundred views because it’s not featured, and not too many people will find out about it…unless they’re lucky or that Chris Crocker person, lol!

Then somebody makes some 15 second video of a baby or pet doing something funny, which takes NO TALENT, and it gets featured and all of a sudden it has a million views!

Mountain bikers when they encountered me on xc trail “You are seriously taking the p*ss :astonished: ?”

Me: “Na…this trail is just too easy on a bicycle :)”

SMALL CHILD ON A KIDDY BIKE: mummy, Why does his bike have less wheels than mine?

I know exactly what you mean. There loads of unicyclists that are way better than me but it’s just being lucky I guess. It’s not even my best video. And the music is by the foo fighters which will definately be copyrighted.

You are a really good rider; I meant stuff like some stupid little 10 second clip of somebody getting hit in the nuts with a baseball, or other videos that didn’t take any particular talent to make, that get’s millions of views. They need to feature more good videos like yours and others.

I think one key to getting lots of views is to keep it short, and have a super strong opening, middle and end. In other words, something that grabs the viewer’s attention immediately, and holds it throughout. Then word of mouth helps a lot. So how did yours get featured? Did YT contact you and tell you?

That’s always interesting.

Last night I rode out on my uni and our neighbor, who just got back from New York, stopped on the sidewalk when he saw me. I greeted him as I continued to ride. He then said, “There are somethings in life that make you wonder if you are really seeing them.” A few seconds later: “This is one of them.”

No, It was just there the other day on top of the featured bit. No emails or anything.

I had a very similar conversation the other day when I was out unicycling with a mate.
Guy: Wow! unicycling. Do you want some drugs
Me: No
Guy: Does your mate want some drugs
Me: No
Guy: (walks off)

It was practically exactly the same thing that happened. Maybe unicyclists are some sort of drug dealers magnets.

mtber: Is that a front or rear wheel?

Me: Depends on which direction I’m riding! :stuck_out_tongue:

If read many YouTube video comments, you’ll quickly realize the vast majority of YouTube’s audience are complete morons who are completely repulsed by anything that might make them feel inferior… therefore, as you’ve surmised, only babies and animals make worthy subjects.
