purchase of unicycle

My son (13yrs) is interested in purchase of a cycle. Where do I start? Any
advice re: getting started.

Start with a nice quality set of pads, a big box of Band-aids, and some
bactine. I say this (besides for the humor) to give you an idea of what the
first few weeks of any unicyclist’s career are like. I’ll let people who know
more about the actual purchasing of these things let you tell you about that
part, but I wanted to make a point to let you know that your son is going to
need a lot of encouragement from you to keep at it. Be supportive, and help him
get started! Unicycling is worth every scrape it takes to learn. Good luck, and
happy wheeling!

If I was learning how to ride all over again, I’d run out and buy those
wonderful hand/palm/wrist protectors that are sold for use with roller- blades
(in-line skates). They provide a hard “skid plate” for your hand, so that when
you crash, you just wear away the plate rather than your flesh.

I agree, I know lots of ppl about the age of 11 (lets not go in to how  )
and with myself included I know of no injeries at all! I guess it’s an
american thing?

I have to agree with Jimmy, I never got any scraps, cuts or bruises learning to
ride. In fact the only injury I ever got was when a Giraffe broke in half at
high speed when I torqued it for a large bump.

Land on your feet! Sometimes running!

I am an American, as a matter of fact. I just keep the domain name to show
you never can tell.

Although I do recall hurting my groin when learning the kick-up mount, but
that’s irrelevant, isn’t it? Anybody trying to learn that is ASKING for a saddle
in the groin!

You all are making me feel a little spastic. Being not the most coordinated
of people, many bumps and bruises were sort of inherent in learning to ride.
Now, granted, these injuries normally took place while trying to do odd things
such as ‘mountain unicycling,’ that first stairs episode, etc. I just can’t
believe it’s a nationality thing, though  Maybe genetic, though.

Injuries do occure

I am now recovering from a broken leg. I learned to ride this year, I was trying
to improve my skills to the level where I could ride in a parade. I have not
reached level 1 in skill yet. I think it’s the part about dismounting
gracefully.

I had actually done a free mount, (after about 15 or 20 tries) and had gone the
length of the parking lot. (bout a tenth of a mile.) I was exhausted. I came
ALMOST to a stop, and put my foot down. I think my foot pivoted around the toe
with the heal coming inward. At anyrate I had a sprial fracture of the fibia
(sp?).I expect to go back to practicing in a couple of weeks. (The Dr. said that
I had to wait 3 months from the break before I could go back)

I am determined to be able to ride on my 50th birthday next year.

I broke my fibula (same one?) about 3" below the top when I was 21…
stupid… I jumped out of a tree.

Any way I had a cast on my lower leg for 5 weeks. I was riding a lot then to and
from work and all, my main transportation really. I didn’t stop, I had to take
my toe clips off but I kept riding. Up and down curbs the whole thing. It took a
little getting used to and I didn’t do any spins.

But then My Tibia was fine and it bears all the weight.

Spiral fractures are slower to heal than what I had though. :frowning:

On the other hand it was almost a year before I could run again, The impact of
each step really hurt!

Hope you recover fast

Actually, I had no pain at all during the 6 weeks that I was in the velcro boot.
It’s when I took it off and started walking again, thatI have had the pain. The
Dr. said that I would have a new pain each week. I think I am about a year
ahead!

Actually this is the second time I have broken a leg. I got the same type break
on the other leg about 18 years ago, on my first sky diving attempt. (Took me a
year and a half to get up the guts to do it again.)

Oh well.

Thanks for the concern.

Cheers

Bryce
