I will be getting a couple of hubs and frames back from being powder coated hopefully this weekend. Due to the sandblasting process prior to being recolored, all the parts will be coming back bone dry. What lubricants/bonding agents should I be using upon reassembly? Are there any special precautions I need to take as far as preparing the parts to be reassembled into a full unicycle when I get them back?
Nothing special, just don’t forget any spacers that were there between bearing, hub and cranks, and pay attention which sides your pedals and cranks go on. (I may have pulled cranks back off remounted tires the other way around a few times in my life )
I tend to use a bit of whatever grease I have nearby on the bearings and hub splines to keep minimize corrosion. (Anti seize would probably be ideal, but since this is taken apart at least every few years it doesn’t matter too much for me).
Usually some loctite on any small bolts, grease on the pedal threads, that’s about it.
With a steel-aluminium combination on frame and seattube I’d consider some grease/assembly paste to prevent corrosion, aluminium-aluminium tends to be fine dry in my experience.
Thanks Finn!
The only Stl-Alu connections I will be making is some impact cranks to steel pedals and hub. Thankfully the frame is Alu.
