schlumpf
Geared uni
By geared do you mean with brakes?
With gears like the planetary gears in a schlumpf hub to change the transmission ratio or pedaling cadence.
Looks beautiful. For me the bar had way too little grip for properly braking on steeper descents when I had to pull hard. I am now using this setup.
The whole setup isnāt beautiful, but it works and has way less flex, than there was initially.
A geared unicycle (guni) is kinda like with bicycle gears, where you can use a lighter gear for uphills, to make pedalling easier. Or a higher gear to go fast.
The only available option is the Schlumpf hub which has a normal gear, and a high gear where you can go faster (the wheel moves 1.5 rounds for every round your leg moves). You switch gear by kicking a switch on the hub/crank. These hubs are really expensive though.
Itās not the only option, just the most common one. Last I looked you can still find the occasional Huni-rex.
In addition, a number of people have posted custom unis with gearing over the years that are not schlumf.
Two notable (related) examples
This is old article by @Bruce_Dawson is a nice read on the subject
That article reminded me of another legendary example of a guni⦠āBlue Shiftā, which is currently (still) owned by @mindbalance IIRC.
Thanks for the shoutout. I enjoyed the few years where I arguably owned the greatest collection of geared unicycles in the world. Now I own nothing interesting having returned the Penguin Giraffe to its owner and sold Red Menace. All I have left is a 29" Schlumpf. Well, I have a 5ā giraffe unicycle but that is not āgearedā in an interesting way - itās 1:1.
Sorry, Iām lazyā¦I tried finding this info in the link but it sent me down a rabbit hole of further links. What gear ratio is the Blue Shift? Iāve never heard of it before.
1:1.5. It appears to be a direct Schlumpf predecessor, where you need to dismount and switch gear manually.
The picture is of a proper Schlumpf hub. The other can be seen here: Riding Faster on One Wheel: Geared Unicycles | Random ASCII ā tech blog of Bruce Dawson
I finally managed to gather all my unis and took a group photo. Left to right:
My sons 12". He loves it (he loves all unis) and I hope he will actually learn to ride it this year. Probably not
And no, I actually bought it for my son and not for myself.
The 16" MicroMachine. I bought this one as a mistake - I though it was a 20". Iāve had tons of fun with it though, and used it for Muni and winter cycling. A son of my friend now got it, and heās already super close to riding it around already.
The same friend who gave me my 24" Torker - his first uni. This is a rock solid steel machine, with 46 (or was it 48?) spokes. I mainly use it for backwards and other tricks, or to ride around with my son (on his tiny bike).
My very first unicycle, a KH 29". Been with me since 2008. This was my only uni for over 10 years and I have ridden it everywhere. I have ridden over 5000 km on it with absolutely no maintenance. I havenāt even fastened a single spoke on it until last year, when I changed the tyre, bearings, trued the wheel and installed brakes. Oh, and got myself some shorter cranks. ![]()
Last but far from least: The Beast. My GB4 Coker. I got this from @rusty who had ridden it completely apart. Bent cranks, bent handlebars, baldest tyre you can imagine and finally a snapped hub. This marvel was revived by yet another friend last year and has introduced me to the wonderful world of long distance unicycling and the thrill of riding fast.
2024 was a fantastic unicycling year for me. I have learnt all sorts of stuff from gain ratios from @ruari to general unicycle maintanence from my wheel builder and @unimyra and I am really going to enjoy 2025! ![]()
looks to me like youāre only halfway there. I have 11 or so unicycles. Still keeping my eye out for a 27.5"
Im aware this is an age old post by now. It must have been around the last time I was on this thread, but canāt you clean the metal parts by laying them in Coca Cola. Iāve seen it do wonders with coins.
I think so far Iām sitting at 6 frames and 9 wheels⦠Iāll have to take a family photo myself once I lace up the 9th wheel and throw it on the Hatchet ![]()
6 frames + 9 wheels⦠:counts-on-fingers: Are you using politician math? Those numbers donāt add up. Maybe you have a bike or 4 in there too.
I guess a more accurate statement would be 6 complete unicycles at any given moment and 3 extra wheels Iāve built for them
If only I had that many wheels to play with⦠Maybe a Schlumpf or two, maybe a couple with Berd spokes just for scienceā¦
On the bike side though Iāll be sitting at 3 after I get done rebuilding one I picked up for free
So indeed I would have 9 wheels beyond the 6 currently attached to unicycles
maybe you can have an additional wheel next to the other wheel on the uni, then you would keep the forwards backwards balance, but donāt have to worry about falling sideways. Then you might be able to fit a horse-saddle on top instead of a uni seat, as the setup might be a tiny bit wider.
Donāt forget to take pictures. Three such uniās might come in handy for the whole family.
How dare you have the same amount of bike wheels as uni wheels.
That is like a big mockery to this forum.
