When I was in library school I had a friend who said she played the lottery every week. I told her that I didn’t, but she said something that stuck with me. She said, “I like to keep my karmic windows open a crack.”
Ever since, I have gone through periods when I play the lottery.
Lately I’ve been dropping $2/week on the big multi-state lottery. Twice a week I check the numbers and twice a week I am genuinely disappointed by the results. I enjoy my consistent and inevitable disappointment almost as a third party observer would. And this observer thinks to himself, sometimes aloud, “what an idiot.” I then announce to my family that we are not millionaires, to which my wife replies, “Damn! Foiled again!” and my daughter, “Duh!”
I used to buy lottery tickets under these conditions:
1.) The payoff of the lottery had to at least equal the odds of the lottery*
2.) I had to ride a unicycle more than one mile to make the purchase
3.) I could use no bills…only loose change I could find around the house
*For a lottery with odds of 1 in 10 million a jackpot of less than $10 million is inadequate for a $1 ticket.
I sometimes buy scratch offs when I am in an altered state because they are instant fun. I’m pretty close to even right now. I actually just cashed in a $2 winner (cost $2 as well)
I like to buy scratchers as presents for friends and family on random occasions. I’ll throw 'em into birthday and holiday cards when I don’t have anything better to send. My ma has used them as Xmas gift tags… although we’re lucky if anyone in the family wins any more than $2.
I rarely play the lottery myself… although I’ll throw down $10 on a group of quick picks if the lottery goes above $100 mil.
I knew a guy who figured out how the random number generator worked on the Kentucky Lotto. He made extra money that way, but it turned into work.

North Carolina recently made a lottery and if I was old enough I think I would play every and a while for fun but only spending a few dollars and maybe making a few fun guide lines like harper has to avoid spending to much.
Reminds of an old NewYorker cartoon where the man walks in the door downtrodden, and his wife is saying: Oh, you didn’t win the Lottery AGAIN.
It reminds me I have to SUBSCRIBE to the NYS lottery again, because I don’t have what it takes to check winning numbers, and if you subscribe they notify you. You also only have to send a check every 6 months or 1 year, and they just keep playing the same numbers for you.
I can’t even stand to watch Yolanda Vega on the News doing the Lottery numbers. Grab the remote.
But the dream of winning! No more Wal-Mart floor boss! Top-grade unicycles!
I figured out how to increase your chances of winning the lottery by a considerable amount, if your buying one or two tickets a week instead of buying tickets you put the money aside every time so gradually it will build up, then when you get bored of saving you spend all the money all on one lotery but all diferent numbers, thus increasing your chances
allthough i have never botherd to try so i dont know whether it would work? lol
The more different numbers you buy, the greater your chances of winning.
I’m glad this thread reminded me to SUBSCRIBE, so I never have to go buy a ticket, never have to check the numbers or be concerned about losing a ticket.
It’s stupid too. IF you are going to play the lottery, you are better off putting all your money towards a single high jackpot, instead of buying each day.
i won $96 the very first time i played. i’ve spent about $50 since then and haven’t won anything else. i like to play when the jackpot gets to $200million+ but i think i’m going to stop. the jackpot only gets so high because it’s unwinnable.
