Platform Pedals

Im wondering about the durability and usablility of common platform
pedals (for Muni and trials) that are around $25. Any suggestions would
be nice!

Cheap platform pedals are ok for MUni, certainly better than plastic pedals, but they are not ideal. I used Welgos for several months, but they started to fall apart when I learned to pedal grab. I replaced them with Snafus, which grip better than the Welgos, and are much better for trials. I’m still using the Snafus on my MUni, but I’m about to get a trials uni, and I will probably put them on that and look for something new for my MUni.

I’ve been looking at the Kona Jackshit pedals:

And the Sun Ringle Octane pedals:

Does anybody have experience with either of those pedals?

What I would really like are the atomlab aircorps, but those are like $109.

My general observation on pedals:

The parallelogram style pedals like the Sun Ringle Octane are a better shape for muni because the parallelogram shape flips the pedal right side up for you when you step on it. You don’t have to worry about stepping on the skinny side of the pedal when mounting or when trying to get your foot back on the pedal while riding.

The block style pedals like the Kona Jacksh*t are better for trials and drops because the block design gives you a bigger platform area. The platform is more centered under your foot because the spindle is in the center of the platform. The larger more centered platform makes it more comfortable for landing drops and is more suitable for pedal grabs.

I haven’t used either the Octane or Kona pedals so I can’t comment on how well either of them work.

Unicycle.com has a good deal on the Snafu pedals, they are a block style pedal that would be good for trials stuff. Pricepoint.com also has some good deals on a few of their platform pedals including the Octane.

Thanks for the tip about Pricepoint.com. I just ordered a pair of Octane pedals from there. I’ll tell people how they work out.

Guess What, I dont have close to enough cash for more than about $30. So
do the Snafus last at all? I currently use a pair of oddysey twisted pro, and
the pins have stripped out as I learned to crank grab. so Im looking into
things like the primos, the odysey southgate, or the snafus.

Good deal. I like pedal reviews.

The Octane pedals should be good. I have the Sun Ringle Zuzu pedals on my Coker. They spin very smoothly and have not gotten loose or wiggly with use. The grip pins in the center of the pedal body should give the pedals very good grip. They have beefed up the body (compared to the Zuzu). Good stuff.

Re: Re: Platform Pedals

From those choices, I would go with the Snafus. I’ve ridden the unsealed ones on my MUni for a while, and they held up fine. Also, the pins don’t come out as easily when pedal grabbing, and there easy to replace if they do. In the long run, they are not the best design for MUni, since they have no pins in the center, and are more block like, but if you want to do trials and MUni with the same uni, they are a good choice.

Another cheap alternative are the new Azonic Fusion pedals at

http://secure.oneal.com/cart/product-a.asp?ProductCode=3056D

They are: “The All New Fusion Pedal features Super lightweight one-piece die cast magnesium body, Oversized chromoly axle, sealed cartridge bearings and replaceable pins” to quote the blurb. The Azonic site lists them at 39 USD but you might find them cheaper elsewhere.

I’ve been riding a set of these for a few months and found them very good for the money. They do, however, suck for grabs as the pins tend to get ripped out - I’ve lost 2 of the 7 pins on one side of my grabbing pedal. Still worth the money though.

Cheers,
Neil
