Walbrzych, racing continues

Just a week after my Slovak success, I was again on the start. This time it was MTB race in Walbrzych, 4th one for me this season in MTB Powerade Marathon series.
The profile did not seem hard, but the mountain in front of us when we waited for start seemed intimidating when you were aware that it is our first climb.
And it was looong. About 7km mostly on fire roads seemed to be quite long. Especially that I expected the ride around the mountain and then a sharp turn to the top. So I was riding around and riding and still the turn was not there and suddenly I saw a sharp turn down into the forest and the top cross on the other side. It was a pain to climb, but such unexpected end of climb was a nice suprise. Then we got a really nice steep downhill between the trees and basically it was it. The hardest part of the route was behind us and forrest roads with some ups and downs were in front of us.
This gave me the possibility to ride more in high gear than usually, but it turned out that still we have one significant climb and some nice singletracks on our way. One of singletracks was quite rooty, but not long enough to destroy the fun. Due to longer riding in high I was quite tired towards the end of the race and I got some embarrasing UPDs that would not happen when fresh, but anyway I finished in one piece, happy about the nice ride.
Complete ride was 23km in 2h24m which gave me 71 place out of 78 finishers. As usually all others were on bikes, so I’m not upset about being that far.

Yes, clipless. Going to fast to run it out. I kept on my feet until I could get off the asphalt. I’m okay.

Way to mix it up with the two-wheelers, vookash.

Nice looking tire MuniAddict, I don’t recognize it.

What size ? Bran and model ?

If it is as grippy as it is slick, it will be a nice ride for you with more than enough cushion

Beach ride in Half Moon Bay. Although it was super fun, I think that it messed up my bearings.

They connected up a trail that I regularly ride with another. I’ve ridden it before on my regular unicycle but today I checked out the first half mile of the connecting trail and found it to be freewheel friendly (the surface is smoother since it’s a relatively new trail).

It looks like some bikes got in the way of a nice climb.

Yep, in some places they were in the way (not only on climbs  ). And there I even changed the line to the worse one to overtake them, but still there were some bikers to block me anyway.

What kind of spider/tarantula is that?

+1

Definitely a tarantula, about the size hamburger bun. I’m not sure what variety it is. I usually see them more in July. I stopped and made sure no one came by to run her over or step on her before she crossed the path.

Still whatever it is, cool!

We don’t get any good wildlife like that round here - The arachnids are all either house spiders or fake Widows, and I’ve never seen a snake :stuck_out_tongue: There’s plenty of urban wildlife like foxes and badgers, as well as the odd deer though  Me and my dad have been trying our hardest to photograph the local Heron, but it’s nearly impossible to get near!

I think the same thing when Terry catches snakes on his trails, I know I should be happy I don’t live near anything that can kill me with a good hard stare, but I wish I could see them in the wild! :stuck_out_tongue:

l’Ayré is a mountain on the flank of “col du Tourmalet” (well known to “tour de France” fans).
What happens if you mix Muni and Brassband playing?

re: Brassband Muni?

I did 250km road bike ride last Friday followed by 24km MTB race on an uni on Saturday.

The route was changed due to very muddy conditions and it was on the other side of the valley compared to the last year, so I was completely unaware what kind of route is waiting for me. Just the mud was sure.
Luckily rain stopped before the race and we even got some shy sunshine at the start. The route turned out to have a long, long climb for most of the first half, which gave me the possibility to overtake some bikers, especially at the beginning when there was no mud. Later, we reached path winding across muddy pools which stopped me too often, so I was walking quite a bit this part. Also my brake denied to work with this mud and I spent some time to get some braking power out of it. It was bit disappointing to be overtook while still climbing, but the route was perfect for bikers’ granny gear but quite hard on my legs in 1:1 gear. Also I knew I could not push myself too much after short sleep and long ride the day before, so I tried to take it easier than usual.
Then I passed the most muddy descends and really nice ones came. Not very hard, so I was probably slower than the bikers, but very pleasant and offering amazing views.
Then suddenly we reached the road and as usual it ended with a quick turn into the forest and amazing singletrack down to river on Czech-Polish border. After the border we were on the road again and this time it was long, long strech. Long enough to suspect that I was lost, but still the route signs were there. That was one of the longest paved segments I rode in this series, especially on downhill. Finally we got back into forest for some offroad, but it turned out to be just the final shot before the finish.
