Today I was having brunch at the Wiriehorn Restaurant in the bernese alps. A family gathering of sorts. There’s a bikepark with several trails that start just there, so I thought I take my trusty Oregon with me. Wasn’t yet sure if I was going to ride a trail or just ride along the family while they’re hiking.
Beautiful wheather, beautiful landscape, beautiful muni:
Since the trails weren’t overpopulated I gave it a shot. On the first 200-300m I already regretted my deciscion. The trail was kinda steep (not terribly so, but still…) with many banked turns. I’m not bad at managing each of these challenges individually, but the combination of them is of a completely different oder of magnitude.
A typical section of the trail can be seen at the bottom of the picture - was a bit steeper than it looks.
Still, I kept on riding; often so when I thought I was gonna fall. But with (supposedly) the expression of pure fear on my face I managed to ride through the sketchiest moments without falling. Had a lot of UPDs - mainly because my legs quickly ran out of power (I should do this more often in order to get stronger legs). The one fall was a bit surprising as it was the result of a rather small bump at a flat section - maybe not so surprising after all. I was lucky that the power fence which I mowed down was even more powerless than my legs
.
I got some prop ups from the two wheeled riders as well as a recomendation which trail not to take. ![]()
A picture of me on the way back up. Save to say I was finished.
After that I accompanied members of my family on their hike. First 70 vertical meters up on a small street, then 200 vertical meters down a steep bumpy single trail (only rideable in my dreams, if at all), and finally shy of 4km on a gently descending fire road where I was happy to be able to ride again. Back home I took a shower and had a good two hours long nap. Up again I already began to enjoy the pleasures of muscle soreness. The next 3-4 days won’t be boring
.
For those interested in visiting the place, I rode “Old T-Bar” (without a T-Bar, but at least with a KH starfighter on the brake lever) and “Slalom”: https://www.trailforks.com/region/wiriehorn-bikepark-30406/?activitytype=1&z=14.1&lat=46.60568&lon=7.53740&content=trails,labels,region,poi,directory,polygon,waypoint,nst,routes_featured
EDIT: Also, one of the guys asked me if I was riding over at Marbachegg, as he had seen a municycler there, in the past. Well, it wasn’t me; so who of you guys rides there? And is it worth it?
