Personal breakthrough on toofowt

I’ve been working lately on riding backward. At first I tried to learn
riding backward for free by taking advantage of mishaps in learning to
idle. (I think Rhysling took this approach too, no idea about his
success.) But I never got past one full revolution backwards that way.

So I started dedicated learning: two revolutions forward along a
certain railing, then backward, etc. (The railing wasn’t longer than
that.) Gradually holding less onto the railing. Today I was ready to
ride without the railing and got somewhere. Countless instances of two
revolutions backward, and a handful of three revolutions backward
(some of them continued forward, some ended in upds). OK it may not
sound much to most of you, but for me it was a tremendous feeling,
almost comparable to my first unassisted ride forwards. From here, I
can only improve.

BTW, a funny thing happened. Many of my backward rides ended in upds
because it sort-of felt so easy that I forgot that I had to continue
doing effort. I thought it went by itself (which it didn’t).

(As “toofeno” has been coined for one foot backwards, you get the idea
for what toofowt is…)

riding backwards

just wait till a pedal falls off.tighten them bad boys all the time

SNAP!!

klaas, this is the weirdest thing ever
i’m at just about the exact same place as u r right now
two or three backward revolutions and then either forward or downward
not my choice, sadly
i’m now practising a whole mishmash of idling, backwards and 180 spins
got a qualifying run with 5 rings last night so i might be doing a bit more juggling over the weekend

namaste!

Me too! I’m doing sessions of 0-idling, then 1-idling, then 2-idling. Then when I practice my right-foot mounts, I try the no-idle backwards. Since I have a limited area, I try for a circle instead of a straight line. One so far! This is a very fun place in my uni development. Much better than 200 static mounts a day :stuck_out_tongue:

Since I added some blue loc-tite to my pedal threads, I haven’t had any probs with unscrewing, despite doing lots and lots of backwards revs over the past month.

It’s good to have some company (even if remote). In my case, it’s a
lot more downward than forward.

No 180 spins here yet. And I’m not a juggler so I replaced the 5 rings
with hopping. I’ve also discovered that it’s easy to go into idling
straight from a rollback freemount. I now realise I have to try to
ride backward straight from the mount.
