Pedal grabs

I know there have been posts a while ago on this, but I wasn’t nearly
ready at the time. However, I’ve realized lately, with a little practice
that the first part s really easy. I can hop onto a park bench, landing on
either the pedal alone, or on the pedal and crank. I can balance there no
problem and hop back to the ground easily.

It’s the second part that seems really hard (and potentially dangerous).
This is the part where you flick yourself and uni from the pedal grab up
to the normal riding position. I can get about 50cm jumping height and
feel very comfortable with hopping and gapping, so I feel ready to tackle
this. The only things I can think of are:

  • practice on Monty 20" rather than Gazz 24" - lighter, less height
    needed.
  • use full armor
  • find a place where my falls will be minimized (e.g., a park bench is
bad, something like a pallet is better)
  • watch the available videos some more.
  • practice like heck.
  • go back and wade through the old posts - who has the time?

Can anyone add some visualizations or ways to break this down into steps
to get me going?

Joe Merrill

“Available videos”: don’t forget the one (or two?) that Jeff Lutkus has on
his site of a Kris Holm workshop. Pretty instructional.

Hi Joe,

You’ve pretty much answered your own question I think. For the final bit -
going to rubber:

Think of it as more of a spring than a jump off the hooked foot… on a
20" anyway. It’s more like a upward vertical motion as opposed to trying
to go up and to the side. The uni kinda swings in under you. Going from a
hooked crank and pedal is easier. On my 24" I find it a bit easier if I
hold the seat further away from my body. Keep your weight centered over
the axle so when you go up and land on the object you are balanced. If
your weight is to far forwards or too far back the uni will shoot one way
or the other.

Stick at it and be brave. this is the scariest move I’ve learened to date
but it’s also one of the handiest too as it opens up a whole new level of
things to ride on

Cheers, Neil
