wow, i havent been on this sight in a long time but anyways. just wondering, what are your guys opinion on dreadlocks.
dreads good.my opinion important
yah!
I tend to associate dreads with smot pokers. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is up to you.
I’ve been thinking about having my hair done like that. There were some things that made me change my mind though:
-
Like SqueakyOnion said, most people will think you smoke pot, even if you don’t (anymore)
-
The process of getting the dreads done seams to be rather complex and long
-
When they get wet they will take longer to dry
-
My hats wouldn’t fit anymore
-
It seems to me that washing out the sweat after a good long muni ride would take forever
-
Dealing with police officers and the likes could get more difficult
But it would probably look pretty good. So who knows, maybe I’ll do it anyways sometime.
I believe dreadlocks are an important part of being Rastafarian.
If you are not a Rastafarian, then you will only want dreadlocks to show that you are a non conformist.
If you are a non conformist, why are you seeking a consensus on the subject?
ahhh! very good point. But i never said i nessassarly wanted nor didnt want them. i never said i did or didnt have any intention on getting them. i was just looking to start a thread on a hair style, and if you yourself are rastafarian i can see why you would point that out, and for that i’m sorry. but all i was doing was starting a forum thread on a hairstyle i had just heard of a while ago, but just started to take the time to sit down and researrch it to learn more about it (seeing as there are many myths surrounding them).
Did you ever see a business man with dreads?
^
yes. all the time.
no, not really…
For the avoidance of doubt and confusion, I am not a Rastafarian. More of an old cynic.
Many religions insist on people not cutting their hair, or not shaving their beards, or they place severe constraints on how much can be cut, or which parts of the head.
For example, a strict Sikh male will not cut his hair or his beard. Strict Jews have those long “bangs” of hair at each side of their faces. Strict Muslim males do not trim their beards. Athenian philosophers in classical Greece grew beards.
Very often it is little to do with anything that their god wants, and much more to do with identifying as part of the group, and excluding those who are outside the group.
Similarly, in the 1950s, teddy boys had quiffs and “DAs” (a hairstyle at the back which resembled a Duck’s Arse) and in the 1960s/70s, rockers had long hair.
It is for this reason that when people are conscripted into the army (e.g. British nartional service in the 1950s) the first thing that the army did was cut their hair vary short. This also used to be the case in some prison regimes. The pretext was hygiene (avoidance of lice) but the real reaosn was that it stripped the person of a badge of their identity outside of the army/prison.
The thing about long hair or a long beard is that you can’t get it quickly. The longer the hair (or beard) the longer you’ve been “in” and the more “authentic” you are. It’s not only a badge of membership, but also a badge of rank.
In those sub cultures where hair styles are short, there is usually some other “badge” that takes a bit of effort to get. For example, anyone could become a skinhead tomorrow by having his head shaved and buying the uniform. However, to be truly “in” he would also need suitable tattoos. Anyone could become a mod by having his hair cut short and buying the costume, but to be really “in” he would need the customised Lambretta.
okay thanks for clearing that up. i just wanted to make sure i wasnt offending anyone by bearing the question. . If anyone else wants to give there opinion on dreads go for it.
Dreads look OK on some Caucasians … some just can’t pull it off.
When I see a balding man my age with dreads I giggle. Maybe I’m jealous …
Better than a hair weave or toupee!!!
If I ever get dreads I am getting a neck tattoo as well. Then I can work in a co-op…
I love co-ops by the way. I am just a natural born tight-ass.
Dreads are cool, but I think they would be a lot of work to keep up. I am personally to lazy to deal with the persumed upkeep it would take to deal with dreads.
Not in DC, but in Colorado, yes.
As long as you keep them clean I don´t care either way.
Gah. I keep typing accent marks instead of apostrophes.
‘’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’
There. That´s better.
¡Gah!
A friend of mine had dreads for a while. He had it done at a local “black” barber’s, and they told him his hair wouldn’t hold the style very well because it’s not coarse enough (he’s white). Despite this, he grew them for nearly a year and they were getting quite big and impressive regardless, but he found they made his scalp really itchy to the point where he couldn’t stand it anymore and shaved all of his hair off.
Shame really, I thought they looked pretty cool. Now he has a mohawk.
As an ex dread-head I have a few opinions on dreads. First of all everyones dreads are different as well as their reasons for making them/getting them done/letting them happen/helping them along.
For some people it is a style thing and for some people it is a reflection of their lifestyle. I had dreads for 4 years. They took a couple years to form properly as I did not make them as much as help them along a bit here and there and keep them clean (never added any wax or other dread product, mostly just washed with dish-soap)
I cut them off when they no longer fit my lifestyle. I was actually surprised how clean they were inside when I cut them. No lint buildup, no dead skin, just clean healthy but tangled hair.
I shaved my beard at the same time but had to grow that back (though I keep it trimmed a lot shorter now)
If you hang out with enough dread-heads you can start to associate different dread characteristics with different personality traits. Yah I have a lot of hippie friends.
I think dreads can look pretty good. I would say they definitly arent for everybody. The only reason i never grew them was beacause i didnt want to wait all the time it was gonna take for them too actually look nice. Too lazy for that. Instead i stuck with my already sweet locks of pure amazing.
I had dreads my entire senior year of highschool. The main thing i noticed is that 99 percent of the guys thought they were awesome, and 99 percent of the girls thought they were disgusting and dirty. Even though they weren’t actually dirty. But yea, I thought they were awesome and don’t regret having them.
dreads on white people is almost comical. That being said, I still wanted them at one point. They look ok on some people. If your hair is long enough that they won’t look like a cracked-out Coolio aka Coolio, than go for it. They are a pain to create(i’ve done dreads for others before) and do need some upkeep, but they definitely change your look.
only if you “make” your dreads. but if you just let them happen it takes a real long time for them to start looking good.
Dreads have much more character when you let them form themselves.
