It’s been some time, should unicycling be an Olympic sport? Do you think we are there yet?
There are too many styles of unicycling to be just one event
What disciplines are thinking of?
I mean, the questin is the same as “shall cycling be olympic?”. Some disciplines are, others not. Artistic cycling, cycle polo, cycle ball and trials aren’t. The unicycle is only a sports equipment, like a bike. But there are many totally different disciplines. The question has to be answered for each separately. Or maybe not. My answer for all disciplines would be no.
Good point yeah that’s true.
True there are so many styles of unicycling that it would be a pretty big competition
as of now I believe there are like 40 different type of sports… Just thought I would mention it.
Hey, right now, unicycling is very far from being an olympic sport. One first step towards that would be having IUF recognised as an official international federation by the IOC. It would also legitimize IUF in the eyes of the world.
why should it be olympic? It’s an absolute fringe sport. There would probably be many other sports that would come before unicycling. Be happy, if it’s not Olympic, then it’s still fair and peaceful, doping is not an issue. If it were Olympic, it would suddenly be about money and the result would be a lot of spite among competitors, doping cases. The sport would not be as nice as before.
I’d love to see it someday, but we’re not there yet. From local meets I’ve done (muni and a bit of trials), formats and judging vary a lot, and TV-friendly events are few. A small, tight slate like high jump, 100m, and trials finals would be the most watchable and easier to standardize.Seeing how presentation drives interest, a single flagship event would help first. I felt that at Laver Cup after snagging The Laver Cup Tickets on a fan resale site where prices can be above or below face value, the packed arena did the rest.
I don’t think we’re there yet …and hope we never will be.
No need to drift towards corruption.
Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to see unicycling find a bit more recognition as a sport as opposed to being associated with the circus. But not if the IOC is the way to get there.
Yes I think it would be cool to watch and I might get a shot in the Olympics
I’d totally watch Olympic unicycling, but I think it’s just too niche to ever get into the Olympics.
I don’t think there are enough active, good unicyclists to be in the Olympics.
I’d be great if there were, but even if there are enough unicyclists, many probably aren’t Olympic level. (No offense)
For now, we can keep Unicon as a separate unicycle-themed Olympics.
But for sure in the future, I think it’s possible. We just need to spread unicycling.
So maybe everyone should teach interested people in their area how to ride, and we can eventually make unicycling into a known, common sport.
I think unicycling isn’t quite Olympic-ready yet, but it is getting closer. The community and events like Unicon show real progress, though it still needs wider global participation, standard rules, and more public visibility.
We may not be there, yet. But I think some form of unicycling could be an Olympic sport someday. My bet is that it would start with freestyle. However, considering the fact that skateboarding is an Olympic sport, we could see trials, flatland, or urban disciplines being accepted first.
Given the fact that mountain biking has been an Olympic sport since 1996, I think Muni could be an “extreme” offshoot of that.
I think the question that has to be answered “yes” is, “Will people watch it, and can advertising be sold during the event?” If the answer is “yes”, then unicycling can/will become an Olympic sport.
Case in point…since 1998…

Maybe THEN Strava will add unicycling to their app?
I agree. Once unicycling is big enough to be Olympic, Strava would have a unicycling option.
That’s a cold burn I approve of. Sidenote: I’ve always laughed at the “ice scrubbers” from the first time I saw it.
