NUC/IUF 2002

Hi all,

We will be staying with friends in Seattle next summer during the two
conventions but, having never been to a convention and having never been
to Seattle, I can’t answer the questions he sent. Can you help?

Here they are:

Finally, a few questions for you:

  1. Where are the conventions going to be held?
  2. What are the hours of daily goings on?
  3. Will you have time for, and want to be seeing other things around the
area? I promise that there are millions of things to see and do if you
have the opportunity. Some should not be missed.

Also, our friends live in Buckley, WA. Where is that in relation to the
conventions?

Thanks, Bruce

Both NUC and UNICON are being held in the Snoqualmie Valley. Snoqualmie
and North Bend are the cities. Gym related events will be in these towns.
Track related events will in Issaquah. MUni events for UNICON will be at
Snoqualmie Pass. NUC has no organized MUni events planned. I think
Buckley is about an hour away from the Valley, not sure on this though.
As for how much time you will have for other things besides Convention,
depends on what you compete during the Conventions. There is a day
between them as well. From my experience of attending conventions I find
there is only time for the convention. Our days start early and end late.
But I also was looking after a large team as well. A small family unit
would have more freedom. Maybe those who came to the Convention in 1999
could give a little better idea as to how much site seeing they had time
for. Also here is the web site that is just getting together.

I don’t recall seeing a reply about #3 “How much time will there be for
other things”. Basically you get as much time as you make. If you are
competing in every event then you will not have much time. But most people
don’t do that. So, if you’re not competing in the standard skills you can
take off for that part of the day and do what you want (standard skills is
not the most exciting event to watch).

The NUC next year is going to be compressed. There may not be as much
“dead” time where you can take off and do what you want. UNICON though
will be longer and you should be able to find more “dead” time to go out
and do something on your own.

The artistic events will be held in Snoqualmie and North Bend; racing will
be held in Isaquah; basketball (UNICON) will be in Snoqualmie; hockey
(UNICON) will be held in North Bend; and, MUni will be held at The Summit
at Snoqualmie Pass. For more information (exact events addresses, etc.)
please see the preliminary information posted at either
http://www.unicycling.org/usa/nuc/2002/ or
http://www.unicycling.org/iuf/unicon11/.

Also, watch for the official debut of the NUC 2002 / UNICON 11 Web sites
at http://www.nwcue.org on January 1st, 2002.

Very, very preliminary schedules are available at http://www.nwcue.org.
These preliminary schedules are subject to change.

I agree with a recent post that said, “If you enter all of the competitive
events, you won’t have much time for other things.”

The NUC schedule is very compressed and features only the events
required in the USA’s competition rule book. The UNICON schedule is much
more flexible.

According to my trusty copy Delorme’s Topo USA 3.0, Buckley is 26.97
miles south / southwest of the city of Snoqualmie (the convention
headquarters and artistic competition venue) as the crow flies.
Unfortunately, if the crow is driving the roads of western Washington
instead of flying, he’s going to have about a 54 mile drive. You have to
head west out of Buckley until you hit Interstate 5 in Puyallup; take I-5
north to Highway 18 in Auburn; take Highway 18 north / east until you hit
Route 202 in Snoqualmie; then, take Route 202 east about a mile through
the heart of metropolitan Snoqualmie (don’t blink) to Meadowbrook Way and
Mount Si High School.
