Nimbus II 24" or Pashley Muni 26"???

About to order first unicycle in th uk so choice not as varied as
in the US.

Decided on 24" or 26", at this stage not fussed whether Muni or
‘freestyle’ and at my price point not sure that there is much difference
other than tyre size and tread. I have a large selection of 24" and 26"
mountain bike tyres from many years mountain-biking so imagine i could
‘convert’ a freestyle to a muni and vice versa

Anyway, enough nieve waffle, the choice is down to two (from
www.unicycle.uk.com)

24" Nimbus II Unicycle
http://www.unicycle.uk.com/shop/shopdisplayproduct.asp?catalogid=132

pros: easier to replace bearings (feature?), flat crown cons: poor pedals,
hub not as good as the pashley suzue

or

Pashley Muni 26"
http://www.unicycle.uk.com/shop/shopdisplayproduct.asp?catalogid=101

pros: nicer hub, pedals cons: lollipop bearings(bad?)

Apart from the obvious I really am unsure what are features, what I am
going to hate and replace from the start and what doesn’t really
matter an iota.

Any thoughts welcome. My gut fealing says go with the Pashley…

cheers in anticipation and happy new year

David Turland

A good pair of pedals will cost you less than $40 U.S.
So I really wouldn’t let pedals be a con.

> cons: lollipop bearings(bad?)

Lollipop bearings are only a problem when they are poorly implemented
(this is true of most low end unicycles that use lollipop). The pashley
lollipop style bearing holders are just fine.

If you’re just learning to ride, the 24" will be easier to learn on. A 24"
is also better for learning new skills than a 26".

If your goal is to get into muni, I don’t know how well the 24" Nimbus
would convert to a muni. If it will fit a fat tire (2.6" or bigger) then
it might do well as a muni. If you plan to do muni you might want to buy a
second wheel with a DH rim and a better hub and then swap wheels between
the freestyle wheel and the muni wheel. I don’t know what size hub fits
the Nimbus II. NK and Suzue are both good strong standard hubs. The NK is
wider than the Suzue and is what comes on the Semcycle Deluxe. My guess is
that the Suzue would be too narrow for the Nimbus II.

So I’d lean towards the 24" just because it’s easier to ride and is more
versatile. If the Nimbus II can fit a 24x3" tire then the choice is a
no-brainer.

I doubt the Nimbus II will take a 3" tyre… 2.6" maybe… but best to ask
Roger at unicycle.uk.com to be sure. The stock hub on the Nimbus ain’t
that strong so if you’re looking at hopping and dropping you’d probably be
expecting to break it.

The 20" Nimbus II will take a Suzue hub (with some gentle persuation to
push the forks closer together) so I’d guess the 24" will do the same.
It’s not an ideal solution as it’ll put extra stress on the bearings but
NK hubs ain’t easy to come by in the UK so it’s the only viable solution.

The 24x3 Max Traction @
http://www.unicycle.uk.com/shop/shopdisplayproduct.asp?catalogid=85 might
be worth your attention. It comes with a Suzue hub and DH rim for
starters. If time is on your side (and you can wait a bit) I believe the
next load of 28" Nimbus frames will take a 3" tyre - the current
incarnation used in the above is just too narrow for a 3" Gazz.

A 26" Pashley is a beast once you stick a 2.6 Gazzaloddi (a 3" won’t
fit) on it so I’d recommend going for a 24" wheel for the same
reasons as above.

I think Neil has said it all here. The NK is not an option.

Some of the noticeable things on the 24" Nimbus: it has the best all-round
24" tyre I have ever seen on a 24" unicycle. So good I am going to import
them separately! The rim is also a lot better than the standard Taiwanese
one, being well wide! The frame is strong and wide with a good foot
support, I confess to not knowing if it will it on the 24" x 3" tyres…
I will check tomorrow and tell you, my guess is no because of the height.
As Neil says we do now have 28" Nimbus II frames in though  very nice.

No, the 24" Nimbus frame does not fit a 24" x 3" tyre, it was worth
checking but does not. About an inch too small!

Master plan now is one of those 28" Nimbus II frames in place of the 24"
Nimbus II frame, rest of the components as stock. would give me the
opurtunity to try some muni as well (after the trivial issue of learning
to ride it 8-)))). No sign of the 28" on the web-site and, goddarnit, its
Sunday… methinks a phone call on monday to Roger at
Unicycles.co.uk. Good to see the proprietor active on the group.
