new wheel [spoke lenth]?

i will be taking apart my 26 inch wheel and lacing my Profile hub to a 24 inch Alex DX32.does anyone know the exact spoke lenth to use?

i’d also like to here some thoughts on the spokes.should i bother with 14/15 double butted?or should i stick with plain 14g?

i weigh 160lbs

and oh ya,whats-up with those titanium spokes on uni.com.has anyone here tried those?

Jagur-

Would the unicycle spoke length calculator help you? I don’t know if it has the hub and rim info that you need.

spoke lenth

thanx,Harp

but no go,they have a 20 inch Alex there but not a 24inch

Re: new wheel [spoke lenth]?

The 24 and 26" DX rims ain’t in the calculator because we don’t know the ERD
measurement for them. Alex, for some reason, decided not to put them up on
their site. Very helpful.

Anyhow, if anyone out there knows either measurement let me know and I’ll
feed it in to the calculator.

Cheers,
Neil

Hi -

I have a catalog that lists the ERD of a 24" Alex DX32 at 495.

BTW - If anyone has an interest in wheel building I highly recommend “The Bicycle Wheel” by Jobst Brandt. It has everything you would ever want to know about spoked wheels including a step by step proceedure for building one. My copy came from Amazon.com and cost about $25 as I recall.

In the book, Jobst explains why using 14/15 gauge swaged spokes makes for a stronger wheel that straight 14 gauge spokes.

spoke lenth

thanx,showard

there it is Neil,if you got the time could you feed 495 to the calculater

Jagur,

I presume you’ll use a cross 4 patern? Guess it would have a different spoke length than the cross 3… yes?

The Profile/Alex combo makes me smile- I think you’ll like it, too…

Christopher

spoke lenth

thanx to you all.Neil,Showard,Rodger and maybe Rysling

244.72 (4-cross) is the spoke lenth givien,i guess i’ll round-up.

i think i’m going to use DT spokes.the uni.com.uk web site says to add a millimeter cause of the shorter nipples(oh baby) anyway i never new that.

i will be using the J.Brant book to build these(i have a 1st. printing) i love that book, you would’nt want to argue with him.i wonder if the technical differances in bicycle wheels and uni wheels would be worth a new chapter in the next “revised version”?
