New Geared Hub

Hi,

I wonder who’s going to be the first person to put that new geared hub of Harper’s on a Coker…

-Kris.

whoa :astonished: that would rock, me and my friend jonnyd went on a muni trip today, we just need to get better saddles and better tires, the best would be if we got the Kris Holm muni. We are saving our money… and then maybe I will buy a coker with a geared hub… I am drooling, they need to have a drooling smiley face.

I didn’t see a rim/frame on this list of possible replacement parts. I suppose you could always ask, but respoking the hub to a new wheel will would also require fitting the sun cage flange to a new frame as well- I presume this invasive option would have been listed if acceptable; however I can bairly speek for myself, let alone Greg, who knows alot of big words- and can spell 'em, too.

IMHO, I think mating this beast to a common wheel size like a 28" would be more practicle than a coker- common parts, greater selection of wheels, lighter, etc. Practicality asside- sure who wouldn’t wana…

Christopher

That’s what I was thinking Kris! To my way of thinking, the Coker tire would be the most stable at really high speeds.

A 1.5 Coker is Greg’s secret plan for the 10k marathon unlimited class at Unicon. Anyone gonna try to beat him in that race?

As always, unicycle races are won by engines, not equipment. The engine, of
course, is the rider. A highly trained expert Coker rider is almost
guaranteed to beat a less trained, less in-shape geared Coker rider.

This is not to imply that Harper can’t get into the same kind of shape as
Christian Hoverath or Scot Cooper. But if the race were to be held tomorrow,
my money would be on those two…

A NOTE ON RACING RULES:

Hi, I’m John Foss, your 2002 Racing Referee for NAUCC and UNICON. If you
have questions on racing rules, please send them to me.

What about the legality of the geared hub? Nobody has asked yet, but they
probably will. For the 10k race, unlimited class, it is perfectly legal.
Anything goes pretty much, as long as it’s human powered and one-wheeled.
The idea of unlimited events is to learn more about what unicycles are fast,
and to give people a chance to ride something other than the same old 24"
racing unis.

For any USA or IUF-approved track or “regular” race, the geared hub would
not be permitted. Pedals have to turn the wheel axle directly, with no
gearing.

But what about MUni? Here is a weak point in our rules and registration
forms, as I don’t think it is covered anywhere. MUni events have
traditionally always been of the unlimited variety. In other words there is
no limitation on wheel and crank arm size. So I would allow the geared hub
here as well. Or a Coker, or whatever human powered one-wheeler you want.

This applies to all the events listed under Mountain Unicycling on the
UNICON registration form. So the full listing of events that are essentially
unlimited is:

  • Downhill
  • Cross Country
  • Uphill
  • Trials
  • Orienteering
  • High Jump
  • Long Jump
  • 10k Marathon Unlimited Class

This area should be addressed, possibly in the 2002 IUF Rulebook which is
currently under review.

What about Christian Hoverath on a 1.57-Coker?

I think John Foss has brought forth a painful truth. Although at one time I had the power plant of a Ferrari, I now more or less (mostly less) have the engine of a Yugo. No transmission of this universe will turn me back into the 3 liter formula one mill that Christian is now.

I got to meet with Keith Williamson’s Arizuni club on Saturday. It was great fun meeting riders from another city and trying out their goods. Keith even let me borrow his Miyata 24" for the week I’m in Scottsdale. There’s one born every minute. I already managed to get sunburned on it.

Thanks for introducing me to your crowd, Keith.
