Great, thanks, I think I may do it. I’m not apposed to the night rider other than the weight, in fact I have been having a blast on it. I was originally going to get the light version for this season but I see the Aspen is less money is lighter than the night rider light and is available on Amazon.
It’s a world of improvement over the NR, even the lighter version.
Happy on the road too?
I prefer it to the NR (handles camber better, accelerates and decelerates faster due to the weight reduction), but it’s not the perfect road tyre, and I imagine the NR might last that bit longer.
Would you say the night rider is a better road tire? I do a lot of pavement with a little hard packed limestone on the 32. What drew me in was the prospect of doing more riding unpaved bikes trails with the 32, trails I have been riding on the 29er with the maxis Ikon. When I ride unpaved bike trails the night riders tread gets packed with pebbles. A little weight saving would be nice also.
No, I prefer the Aspen on road. I just still don’t think it’s an ideal road tyre.
It’s better than you’d expect from how it looks, but maybe the NR is simply a bit rubbish and we hadn’t noticed as we’d had no better options.
When we get more gravel/road oriented 32” tyres we might look back and think the Aspen isn’t very good on road, but for now I think the substantial weight saving and the reduced camber effects alone make it the best option.
It also happens to be the best option we have for basically any 32” riding right now.
Great thanks.
Well, I pulled the trigger and ordered the Aspen. I’ll let you know what I think in a week or so once I mount it and have a chance to ride it on a few surfaces. I just wish I could get a TPU tube to go with it.
I use the Aspen 32x2.4 for road and gravel riding, paired with a Schlumpf hub. Less than 100 km so far. However, I found it to be a bit too compressible on asphalt at 1.7 bar, especially given my weight (~100 kg). Therefore, I now ride it at 1.9-2.0 bar for distance riding to reduce rolling resistance. So far it has not popped and I am very happy with it ![]()
As a reminder, if the 2.4/AT version isn’t perfect on the road, xou could go with the 2.15/ST version which should be better. This is the version I have ordered.
Sorry for the semi off topic - but what rim are you using here? ![]()

I’m hoping to use the Aspen on a Nextie carbon rim in a tubeless setup. Any thoughts?
Should the title of this topic/thread be updated to include “rims” or should a new rim-specific topic be started?
What do people think?
Sure I’d be pro a thread that just deals with rim offerings - I can see the muddle of having that discussed in this thread even though they do go hand in hand to some extent.
It is the TR3230 from CARBONAL. It is a 30 mm wide, 28 mm deep, symmetrical carbon rim. I am using a tubeless setup with hooks, configured to match my Schlumpf hub with 36 spoke holes.
I think now that tyres are available, most of this thread becomes irrelevant for general 32” chat so a new thread would be better.
I’d recommend a new general 32” thread for show-and-tell, and building.
Why specifically are you after a TPU tube? A nice thin 29”+ tube isn’t that heavy and won’t lose air anything like as fast. Tubeless is an option with the Aspen too.
Take a look at the Light Bicycle option too. I think you might have to email them for rim-only purchases though as last I checked it wasn’t on the website other than as a wheelset.
Let me disagree on that. I’m pretty sure we would gain around 100g with a nice 32" TPU tube over a standard butyl tube - those weigh around 180g, while a 36" TPU tube weight 108g. We may not have the same concept of “heavy”, though ![]()
Regarding the air loss, it really depends on the tube. I have found that Schwalbe Aerothan tubes don’t lose air seemingly faster than butyl tubes.
I have TPU tubes now on my bike, my 29er and my 26er. I’m just looking for a little more weight savings. I have a 2 butyl 32 tube in reserve and they are readily available on Amazon so I’m not in need of stretching a smaller tube. I’m not a fan of foss tubes so I steer clear of those completely and tubeless is far to much messing around for me. I guess what I’m getting at is I felt the tpu would be a nice pairing with the lighter Aspen tire.
One more thing my tpu tubes are holding air quite nicely unlike the foss tubes that loose air over night.
Let us know if it does actually ship tomorrow.
I’ve seen those kind of dates before ![]()
That’s fair. I’m not huge on saving weight, although I always appreciate the increase acceleration capabilities (or I used to, my body complains more if I accelerate quickly now no matter the wheel weight)
