my unicycle was a fire hazard....

I recently attended the Canada Games in London Ont. for cycling,
and I had brought my Unicycle with me for more ease commuting around
campus. (we were staying at the University of Westren Ontario)…
However, I was not allowed to keep my unicycle in my room as it was
considered a “fire hazard”, so it was relegated to the big storage
containers behind the rez, and a 10 minute walk away for storage… The
fire Hazard bit I didn’t understand at all, and the security people
refused to explain (or let me keep my unicycle in my room…).
this is the first time that I’ve ever suffered discimination (if it can
be called that) becauise of my Uni, most of the time I can get away
with anything, just because I am on a unicycle and that is such a
novelty! Bah Humbug.

It was probably more of a “fire code” thing than an actual fire hazard.
Though I have seen unicycle on fire, it was only when someone put juggling
torch wicks in the spokes and lit them on purpose. I can see how having a
bicycle in a small dorm room would be a fire code violation because it
would have a high tendency to block the occupant from exiting in an
emergency or in the dark.

So as they often do, your unicycle became a bicycle because there was no
other obvious way to handle it. People in the position of the university
people who made you store your unicycles are compelled to err on the side
of safety. Now if unicycles were included on the list of things allowed in
rooms…

I’m glad the Ontario Fire Marshal didn’t look into any of the rooms in
the rez at Humber College during NUC. Fire hazards galore. My room
alone had 3.

All the best,

Just remember, if nobody knows it’s a unicycle, it won’t get classified
with bicycles. When you think you might run into problems, perhaps a large
plastic bag would be helpful.

As, I think was stated in an earlier thread, if possible, start a
conversation with these security people. If they see you as a polite,
friendly person, they might be nice to you. (Of course, they might not,
but no harm in trying.)

Hmm, I hope no one makes a similar generalization at my dorm. I’ve kept 5
unicycles in my room for nearly a year with no problems  (I hang them
from the ceiling, so I don’t think I’ll be tripping over them,
fortunately)

That’s really odd. We didn’t have any problems with people taking
unicycles into their rooms at Humber College for the NUC (and some rooms
were packed full of them). Even through university I had two bikes in my
dorm room at times.

I suppose, as John said, the event organizers made the rule that bikes
weren’t allowed in rooms and the unicycle just happened to get lumped into
that rule.

Did you ride your unicycle during the opening ceremonies? That would have
been cool!
