When i posted a trade post, i added a location. After that my real name was shown in the post.
Generally i dont want my real name being visible in public forums.
I am not able to figure out how to avoid this.
Any help appreciated how to avoid this for the next trade post…
Have you set your real name in your profile preferences? When I click on your profile picture, I can see what looks like a name (are your initials C. H.?). If so, you should probably delete them from your profile and they would not leak any more ![]()
Thanks a lot, so easy but i didn’t spot it! Many thanks
Either the full name was somewhere (hidden or not) in your old vBulletin profile and imported when we migrated to Discourse, or you filled it in at some point in the last few years and forgot.
A Discourse import script had the very bad habit a long time ago to fill in the user’s full name based on the (private!) email address, following the pattern name.lastname@email.com, but I’m confident that this was removed before the Discourse migration here.
For the record, it was still the case when I migrated forum.monocycle.info 2 or 3 years before unicyclist.com’s migration, so I erased all the imported full names for the sake of privacy.
I invite users to check their profile and see if the full name field is filled out when it definitely should not be. But again, I’m pretty sure the import script didn’t do that. ![]()
It was completly my fault, no one to blame but me.
When i saw my name in the post i did not remember that i somewhere filled in my full name. And when i searched,i even did not spot the optional field in my profile.
Ive been using Setonix so much that half the time I don’t even remember my real name. Even my parents cally me “hey you silly kangaroo”
A related issue: When I get email reply notifications it states the actual surname of the user and not the user name. I propose changing this to the user name.
Can you give an example/screenshot of the current behavior?
@Canapin your name is your “fake” name in the emails, while madhatchetAndy is shown as Andy. This is sometimes confusing since I think in usernames and not in real names (if provided):
I see.
It would be more logical that the username is used instead of the full name as the email “sender”, especially when the Prioritize username in UX (Show username first on user page, user card and posts) setting is enabled (which is)
I’ve found this additional setting:
| setting | description |
|---|---|
| Display name on email from | Display full names on email from fields |
I’ve unchecked it, let’s see if it resolves the issue.
