My cranks keep falling off

Hey all, I can’t figure it out, I always tighten my cranks before I go for
a ride and after/during they are always very loose one time one of them
fell off resulting in my walking to my brothers worplace and bumming a
ride home. Does anybody know why that may be happening? They arean’t
expensive cranks worth a grand total of probably $15 a pair. Thanks for
your trouble. Dustin Zupancic

Just curious, what happens if you ride the unicycle backwards? (Flip it
around and ride it forwards.)

I’m not into unicycle repair, but I had a guy in a bike shop tell me to
always make sure (on cotterless cranks) that the nut and bolt are free of
grease (wipe them with a paper towel) before you tighten them. Otherwise,
the grease will make it easy for the nut to easily slip off.

Hey, Thanks, I was thinking about puttin some Loc-tite on there too,
hoping that would help also. Dustin Zupancic Unipickle “Graham Boyes”

Your cranks are probably shot. Once they’ve come off a few times, the
square gets smeared and no longer holds. The key is to get them on tight
the first time.

Don’t get grease on the taper. Tighten the nut, then pound with a rubber
mallet, then tighten some more.

Dustin,

This is because 4-square taper cranks (ie normal cranks) basically suck
for mountain or trials unicycles- even the best ones aren’t strong enough.
It is soooo worth getting a good splined setup!!!

Having said that, getting a good (ie >$150) pair of 4 square taper
cranks will definately improve things. Some of the stronger models of
TRUVATIV cranks are decent and have a spider that’s sort of removable
(you’re left with a small attachment area for the spider that shouldn’t
get in the way too much.

A rubber mallet may not pound the crank arm on hard enough.

I’d recommend a brass hammer. Rubber gives too much.

I had a problem with a crank arm slowly coming loose on my Coker. I
tightened it using a rubber mallet twice, but each time it again slowly
came loose. The third time, I wanted to try a brass hammer, but didn’t
have one handy. So, I just placed a flat piece of steel over the crank arm
and hit that quite hard with a 24 ounce steel hammer several times. That
fixed it for good and the flat piece of steel distributed the hammer blows
so well that there wasn’t even a hint of cosmetic damage to the crank from
the hammer blows.

However I’d still recommend a brass hammer or a brass block and steel
hammer just to reduce the chance of damaging the crank arm.

Problem I have found with hammering them off is getting them off
afterwards, they are relativly cheap cranks and I don’t wnat to have them
stuck on there forever. Dustin Zupancic Unipickle “Kris Holm”
