I use a 26x2.6 for pretty much everything muni. I think as soon as you go off fireroads onto anything with roots or rocks or anything, there’s not much in it speed wise and the 26" is just so much more fun to ride. As a bonus, you can also do proper hard downhilling on it too, which you can do on a 29er, but it’s just hard work.
I’m a big fan of 26x3 for general off-road use. Most of my riding would be termed “cross-country”, but often on the rockier side. The 26x3 with 150s is, as has already been mentioned, so close to the diameter of a 29er as not to matter speed-wise and has the advantage of not having to be so careful on the rocks. It’s similar enough for me not to have bothered buying a 29er, even for xc racing. The downside is of course that it’s a bit heavier than a 29er on climbs, but I reckon that’s more than compensated for by the extra stability and forgiving handling (especially when you’re tired on a long ride or race).
The other disadvantage in my experience is that other riders take the mick when you turn up at a xc race with a 26x3 “muni” instead of a 29er “proper xc racing machine”
I’m a fan of the Exiwolf. It would be great for “light trails, smooth single tracks, and gravelroads.” In fact, I think you could even go lighter with the Nanoraptor. Most 29er tires don’t have very stiff side walls, but the bigger the diameter of the wheel, the less necessary lower pressures become.
The only times I find that the Exiwolf is less than ideal for 29er MUni is when dropping more than a foot, descending very bumpy terrain, or riding super slippery and wet trails. More air volume would help with the first two, and bigger knobs would help with the last. I’ve been meaning to try a Stout, but I haven’t yet. From what I’ve seen, it’s probably the best aggressive MUni 29er tire out there because it has a higher volume than most.
Have you ever tried a 36 off road throught the XC trails you ride? I use my 36 for all riding on or off road (technical XC) other than extreme MUni (west coast mountains) I have a unicycle in every wheel size to choose from and still choose the 36 every time. When you master the 36 there is nothing like it!! It allows you to enjoy the trails at the same speed and even faster than a MTB.
Yes I have. I often ride the coker to work, which is a mix of road and light xc, where the extra speed is nice and the tank-like weight and oil-tanker handling doesn’t matter. On anything more technical singletracky and hilly I’m definitely quicker on the 26. Some people seem to love cokers in xc races but it’s not for me.
I know what you mean. I have tried Timberwolf 2.5 x 26" and it acts the same: on low pressure it has will of its own, due to the thin sidewalls. Quite worthless for muni.
I haven’t tried the Stout, but all of those other 29er tires are garbage for tech riding, the Kenda Navegel being the “best” of the lot. The probleem is not so muuch the narrow width or even the thin sidewalls, rather that they all fit loosely on the rim and unless run at comparatrively high PSI, will roll off the rim at the first hard impact or cross vector.
I’m going to get my first muni in a week or two to use this summer and for naucc. I’m getting a nimbus 24" with dual hole moment cranks (125/150). I’m going on a six week road trip out west so hopefully there will be some technical muni (not much around my house) and maybe I could ride with some of you guys. http://www.unicycle.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=1050
Just down in the dan ryan forest preserve (a 3 block ride from my house). Its not a mtb trail but theres a pretty cool trail in the woods. I rode it with the pedals in the 125mm setting in mucky mud just fine.
Yep, that’s it, it’s about the best trail in the Chicago area. If you want some harder stuff, come down to central illinois and ride Farmdale Resevoir with me
I’m thinking of ordering a MUNI. Which is the best overall length? I know someone who has 125mm and they look really short. Although then I could switch the 125mm and my 137mm back and forth depending on how I feel. Nah. I think I would want 150mm. But I have no clue, so a little help
Thanks,
Isaac
PS - It would be a Nimbus 24" ISIS with KH Moments from municycle.ca.
Most people use 165/170 or 150. I prefer 150s (on my 26" muni) but if you do mainly very steep droppy stuff you might find 165 or 170 better. Probably best not to go as short as 125 unless you’re only going to be riding very smooth trails - but in that case why use a 24" anyway?
I like 160-170mm on my 24" because I can just ride so many more hills that I wouldn’t be able to with 150’s. Going down hills also seems far more comfortable with longer cranks. If you’re gonna be riding mainly on flat maybe double hole moments in 125 and 150mm are the way to go but for hilly stuff something longer gives so much more power and control.
I’ve got a Torker DX 24 and a 29er with the Exiwolf. I’ve always had 150s on the 24 and 125s on the 29. I find that it’s really hard to do much more than very smooth trails with the 29er, but I’m hoping that will change now that I’ve put 150s on it. Is it possible to ride really techy XC stuff on a 29er?
