Mountainuni Disc Brakes Have Arrived!

Just wondering:

Have you had any problems with the brakes heating up and burning your leg? That looks too close for comfort to me…

I think that in the extreme case of consistent heavy braking for long periods of time the rotor could become scalding hot. This could happen down mountainside roads or San Francisco Ca. Riding with this warmed disk will not bring your leg in contact with the rotor, but resting up against it may. I think it’s like being on a motorcycle and staying off the exhaust. Inside or outside the frame the disk is very similarly exposed, but your leg is no closer to it than a chain ring on a bicycle, and when have you hit that with your leg while riding?

Jeff has been riding one on his 36er for 5 months, I have had mine built up on the 29er for several months, and we’ve got a few testers about to join us. So far, so good. We haven’t bent any disk, the disk hasn’t hit us, we’ve not been burned, no failures, and a vast improvement in control and consistency with the disk brakes over rim brakes.

I would definitely be interested in just the rotor and bolt on mount. I would get the cranks with them if I could choose what length. I would get 155s and tap my own hole at 130mm. If I liked them I would probably get a second one with 135mm cranks and put a second hole at 115.

What would you think of having the braking track vented something like this

Then have your name laser etched on the wider part near the connection to the crank.

Personally i prefer the look of the triple row of holes.

I know the first post asked not to bug about how much it’s going to cost, but it also said “we will be less expensive than your ‘only hydraulic option’ today.” Will that be for everything I’d need for the setup?

Seems like there are several parts to this system: new cranks, the rotor, calipers/levers, and the mount. Is all of this together going to be less expensive than a full maggura setup?

Sorry for cranky (pun intended) last post. I like to think that five exams from now those will be less likely. I’m actually really excited about these brakes!

I am slowly converting all my unicycles to ISIS so i would get ISIS.

I am definitely going to get an ISIS set up if you figure out a bolt on caliper mount for a nightrider frame and/or my Surly Conundrum frame… Actually, I’ll probably get a triton frame and use the disc system with a 125/150 -ish dual hole crank set up because then I would just need to swap wheelsets and not brakes… Hmmmmm this sounds like a FABULOUS option. I could order the triton without brake mounts and use my 26" and soon to build 29" geared wheelset.

Please! Make a bolt on set up that fits the Triton frame. :slight_smile:

Did everyone here weigh in on the dual hole thread? I’m curious weather we should not attempt it initially. Sinz offers a tremendous variety of sizes in square taper, (115-180) and in ISIS, (135-180) in 5mm increments. I don’t know weather making dual holes makes sense, but if we did a 125/150 ISIS, then that’s the only way you can get a 125 ISIS. We may have a machinist do bulk or the manufacturer, or leave it to the customers until we establish the market to drill their own dual holes.

If they don’t have a 125mm crank option, you should have a dual-hole, because some people will be running a disc brake on their MUni specifically so they can run short cranks.

Offering dual hole cranks as well as all the regular single hole cranks would pretty much cover all your bases. If that is not feasible just make use to allow all the different length single hole cranks.

150/125 should be good enough for most dual holers but you might want to also consider also doing a few 165/137 so everyone has a direct replacement for what they ride.

Some people would not want to loose the ability to use a double hole crank while others would not want to loose the strength of a solid crank.

EDIT: Tom also has a very good point about people using 125mm cranks.

I’ll weigh in and say I’d go for the ISIS 125/150 dual cranks, all day.

The Sinz cranks will be offered at $60, but dual hole may be upcharged to $85

I think that a lot of people get dual hole with the idea that they’ll switch between holes all the time, but in reality, they hardly ever switch. At least I found that to be true with me, and some other people I know will dual-hole cranks.

This is an awesome idea. I mostly ride technical and extremely rocky downhill muni trails here in Phoenix, and I can’t wait to try these out on my KH 24. I’m confident that my full-wrap KH leg armor will protect me from the disk. I’m with skrobo in predicting that my cranks and pedals will do a good job of protecting the disk from rock strikes. I also think it will be cheaper and easier to maintain this system with a mechanical caliper than with the hydraulic hose that is the only option right now when using Magura–Maguras are not easy / cheap to maintain!

If we sell the crank for $60, the brake rotor, spacers, chain ring bolts, steel braze-on mount and assume you can get brakes for about $80, (avid mechanical or shimano deore) then we will rival a $200 maggie system with mounts. (neither system considering brake post or spooner.)

A bolt on mount will cost more, but less than trying to convert your unicycle to disk brakes otherwise, and you may be able to apply disk brakes to your other unis with it. Dual hole cranks may also cost a little more.

Ultimately, for similar upgrade costs, you will have a smoother, more consistent brake for the money. The bolt on system is on the drawing board.

time and effort are one thing, but we’re starting to spend money now… I hope folks wanna buy this system!

What about selling a kit with the rotor, mount, spacers, and chainring bolts? I have cranks I could use, and the Sinz cranks are cheap from a variety of sources, so it would be one less thing that you would need to stock.

As for double hole cranks, that would be something you might offer as a unique item. You might be able to design a jig that the machinist could make for you that would allow you to drill and face the cranks. That way you wouldn’t need a machinist to do the actual labor of drilling and tapping the cranks.

That will definitely be an option, but I think the Sinz will sell well, and I like the one stop shop option. Besides, we’ve tested them on the Sinz and know they work well. I wonder what vintage your cranks are, are they from the day of 113mm spindles or 127mm spindles? It’s worth trying! RaceFace makes a nice Turbine LP crank! Sinz however has a huge range of sizes so you won’t have to modify old mountain bike cranks. Are you running 170’s?

It’s an old set of 165mm Sugino BMX cranks from way back in the day.
