Monty or Onza

Can anyone tell me the difference between onza and monty wheel sets -
which is better and why?

Thanks

Joe

Hi Joe,

“Not much” is a brief answer

Monty tyres come in two flavours: black (newer ones have a thin reflective
strip round the tyre) and skin side walls. The former has a much thicker
side wall and so can be run at lower psi giving easier bounce. I say
easier because you can get the same bounce with the higher psi skin wall -
you just need to time the snap more accurately. The skin wall is about 25%
lighter but needs to be run at a higher psi to stop bottoming out on
drops. Onza do just a single tyre which is very similar to the all black
Monty. It has the same thick side wall so it can be run at low psi. The
tread profile (cross section) is slightly rounder than the Monty and it’s
about a tenth of an inch narrower than a Monty. The tread on all of these
tyres is pretty much the same.

As for the rims… I’ve only ridden Monty rims and never had one taco yet.
I think it’s probably six and half a dozen here as they’re both double
walled and virtually indestructible at this size anyway.

All the rims and tyres are interchangeable which is great!

Personally speaking I prefer the Monty for it’s flatter profile and extra
girth - it’s more stable but only just. Having said that, I’m more used to
riding a Monty so I’m slightly biased

Cheers, Neil
