Miyata Standard vs. Deluxe

It’s finally time for me to upgrade from my wonderful cherished Taiwanese piece
of… I am putting it to good use, I am giving it to a friend as soon as he can
become an official level one, and that if he ever gives it away, he must follow
the same criteria.

But now to the point… For the casual non-competative occasional rider. Is the
Miyata deluxe worth the extra $65?

Please give me any feedback you have, Jeff Sargeant

Unless you’re really short of cash, I wouldn’t think twice about it.

For anyone that wants to do tricks on a unicycle, get the standard Miyata! The
flat square crown on the frame makes a huge difference for doing any skill where
the foot is on the frame.

I’ve heard that the frame on the deluxe is stronger than the standard since it’s
made out of CrMo, but I’m not sure if that’s the case. We don’t know what the
standard is made of. I have broken both frames.

Also in the deluxe, you get a mirror chrome vs. the painted standard in
everybody’s favorite color, seafoam green. Minor detail if appearance matters to
you. The major advantage of the deluxe Miyata is the 36 spoke wheel. The
standard comes with a 28 spoke wheel which is fine for kids, but probably not
the best for you. Any good unicycle shop would be able to let you buy a standard
Miyata with a 36 spoke wheel, either by them swapping it with a wheel from the
deluxe version or building one for you.
