I am dying to get the KH24. Starting out with 150mm cranks. I measured my seat height from the top of the pedal where my foot is to the top of the seat in the center. Its 28". And now I am very uncertain the KH24 will fit me without cutting the frame tube. I do not feel confident I can cut the frame tube myself. It would be costly to me. I was going to get this uni through work (discount) but the very new bike mechanic there now is very green.
Does anyone have a KH24 uni I can actually SEE in person to see if this will work as it will be a tight fit. Or does anyone in MD know of a bike shop with an experienced mechanic that I can trust to cut the tube if need be? Thats a HUGE amount of money for me to totally mess up the frame.
Or should I go with Nimbus and call UDC to see if they can shorten it for me? I will email the UDC group too.
I think I’ll order one and if so, wont be more then an inch to cut off. My brother has a dremel and I guess its not a big deal. But if anyone knows a mechanic in MD close to Gaithersburg that could do it for my own peace of mind, please post/PM me! I hope I make a decision soon as I want one bad.
My son’s friend is under 5’ tall, she rides a 24" with 145mm cranks, the seat is set all the way down to the frame and does fine, in fact she could probably raise the seat some. If you need to have the frame cut, then have the shop you buy it from do the work or another LBS.
Stock crank length on the KH 24 is 150.
I saw your post about not getting the “desired” response on your last interaction with UDC. It is not the norm, they are generally quite good, so maybe you talked to someone who doesn’t ride much?
If you call UDC and ask for Josh, he is the shop mechanic, he would be able to give you some more feedback on fitting frames to inseam.
Also, depending on what KH24 model you get, you’ll want to make sure it’s the one w/o the bicycle rail seatpost with bicycle rail adapter. Make sure it’s the new KH seatpost that does away with that combo else use a standard compatable seatpost as this will give you a little more “height” adjustability w/o having to resort to cutting the frame.
I ordered one! Hopefully it will fit. I am not sure what seat post I will get, the 08 or 09. Probably will be the O8 so just leave the adaptor off? I might switch the seat posts from my trials uni to this one and see if that works. I would like to give the Fusion Freeride a definite try and have it fit that. I also want to start out with 150 cranks until I’m comfortable on it. And later I will use those for muni. So the only change I will do is the hookworm.
I talked to Josh and he is extremely knowledgeable and helpful! I was going to get the KH29 on sale and it seems like with my old seatpost and shorter cranks that would have worked. But decided I’m not ready for that.
I talked to the bike store I work at and they will get another mechanic to cut it if needed. So I hope I will relax now. I can watch so I will know how to do it next time if I need to. But honestly, at my height/size, this may be the one main uni for me! I love the trails, and I will love to cruise fast. I am not into road races so I think I’ll be riding this thing into the ground. And very happy with it! I wont be getting any other unis unless I hit the lottery so I think I’m set. I will post how it goes on the fitting as I’m sure others my size would want to know.
My buddy had to cut the frame on his KH36. He just put a guide on the frame and used a hacksaw, then filed it down. Probably less than 5 minutes start to finish. It’s not a difficult job at all. If you need to have the slot lengthened (for tightening the post in the frame), that may complicate matters, but that would only be the case if you have to take a significant amount off the frame. I’m guessing this will be a lot simpler than you think!
You won’t have to switch the seat posts, the KH 2008 came with the adjustable seat post (didnt have the bulky rail adapter). 2008 and 2009 KH models had the good seat post.
Even the adjustable seatpost (the good one), however, will add a little bit of height compared to a standard bolt on seat post. A standard traditional seat post will shorten the height a tad more: http://unicycle.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=1353 (27.2mm = correct for the KH 24" i believe)
I am glad you went ahead and got the 24, I just responded to your email and then saw this post that you bought it =]
I’m pretty excited now that I ordered it! And my classes are almost done so its just in time for me to practice day and night if I want lol. At work they say my eyes get big and light up when I talk about unis so I’m sure they will understand how I need to get this set up to fit me asap. If the difference is similar to a 20" BMX versus a 24" BMX cruiser, it will be amazing!! I hope I can catch on quicker so I can take it out to the trails soon. I’m loving the scenery and rides on them! I’m glad I’m getting the KH instead of the Nimbus now.
