Hello, I’m looking to get the LightBicycle Unicus rim but there are a lot of customisation options available for it and honestly I don’t really know what I need and what all the options mean.
Specifically for a 36er what would you need for:
Brake System
Bead Type
I know hole count is 36 as I am getting a geared hub
Weave
Center Channel Hole
Drain Hole
Valve Stem
Tubeless Tape
Thanks
Hi
Brake system and bead type are fixed on this rim: disc & hook.
Will you get a new Schlumpf hub? Some of them gave 32 holes, be careful.
UD weave is the most simple design. It is what I got for all my LB rim.
Center access holes makes it easier to lace the wheel. As far as I know, only @mindbalance had built a uni without access holes.
Drain hole is not mandatory, but it may help evict the water that gets into the wheel. If you ride in a wet region, you should consider this option.
Tubeless tape and valve stem aren’t necessary, as you’ll probably not set up a tubeless 36er. Please note that you’ll still need a rim tape, either the tubeless tape - that’ll work - or another one.
Finally, you could get more info on LB’s rim options selection page. Each item has a “info” button that you can click on to display the help
Have fun with this new wheel!

On the no access holes - this isn’t needed for a 36” rim as there is no tubeless tyres out there for set up. And you’d only go through the ordeal of building a wheel with no access holes (not easy) if you were sold on only ever running tubeless.
I’d say drain holes are actually advisable.
I regretted not getting them on my 700c rim and LB have given me directions to drill them now myself.
Previously I understood the purpose as to avoid pressure risks should water get trapped in a tubeless set up but I now see this as more related to mitigation against galvanic corrosion when using aluminium nipples + carbon (which I still prefer over brass).
LightBicycle are super helpful via email so you can also ask them for their help in designing the rim to match the hub you’ll use, your system weight needs and add in laser engraving options or differ types of weave.
I am a huge fan of Braided UD option.
Enjoy the process and the ride when it arrives!

Why do you prefer aluminium nipples over brass?
Sapim Double Squares are really nice to build with, come well anodised and there’s the colours plus a bit lighter.
But I think they’re just a higher quality item and this allows for better tensioning etc.

Thank you this is helpful

I have also read that Sapim alu nipples are treated so that they work well against corrosion. I have no numbers to check this info, though.
