On Saturday, 2.7.26, I met with a reporter from the Laguna Beach Independent News for an interview and to climb the well-known, if not infamous 31% grade hill in Laguna, at 3rd & Mermaid. Having just turned 70, I was quite apprehensive and unsure if I still had the ability to make it up such a steep ascent. The photographer was waiting at the top of the hill to snap shots as I made my way up, and I used my hover X1 drone to follow me as I attempted the climb. The news story should be available online this Friday, 2.13.26, at: https://www.lagunabeachindy.com/

Nice! What is that? A 26” with 150mm cranks?

Thanks. 24 with 150s. I’ll be going back again this Saturday to try it on my 29er and also to get a sidetrack view with my follow drone which will show the steepness a little bit better.

I am sure this is hard for all aged uni riders, at 70,
Good for you!
If you have a pulse meter would be interesting to see what you pump?

By the time I was about 2/3rds up the hill, I was just under anabolic threshold, as I was only a able to speak in very short sentences. Not sure what my HR was but likely at max.
