Latest MUni press: National Geographic Adventure

All,

I just got the November/December issue of ADVENTURE Magazine from National
Geographic. This is not the main magazine, but a very slick-looking,
glossy one that focuses on adventure activities. The magazine is an
interesting square shape, almost as wide as it is tall.

On page 38 is a gorgeous picture of Nathan Hoover and Kris Holm riding
along the crater rim of El Pico de Orizaba in Mexico. This is,
essentially, a shot from the UNIZABA video. The caption at the top of the
page says “potentially huge”. Half the page is picture, and the other half
is a short article about MUni.

It compares our sport to “blindfolded lion taming”, and compares Kris Holm
to Michael Jordan. The only contact information in the article is to
Unicycle.com, which should be very nice for that company. If this article
has as much impact as the Atlantic Monthly one (which still brings people
in since April '97), it could be another big boost for the sport.

I’m unable to “Find out more” at the website. Can you scan and post the
page? Or post a URL that has the “more” you promised.

Perhaps it’s not made it online yet. I just noticed that the heading lists
the issue as “September/October 2001”.

I didn’t mean to mislead anyone in that there would be more on unicycling
at the National Geographic Web site. I looked there later and a search on
“unicycle,” “unicycling,” and “muni” turned up nothing useful. The link
was provided if you wanted to find out more about the magazine.

If it was only the previous issue currently listed, more may come up soon,
and possibly include something about unicycling…

For those who have never read the Atlantic Monthly article it’s at:
http://www.theatlantic.com//issues/97apr/uni.htm

That article and the subsequent links is THE reason I bought my Pashley.

Thanks George!

The link to National Geographic Adventure is
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/index.html but they only have
the Sept/Oct issue up now. As soon as the Jan/Feb issue comes out on
paper, they will probably have the Nov/Dec issue with the Muni article on
the website.

Great magazine even without the muni article BTW - I’ve been a subscriber
since it started.

The Nov/Dec issue is up.

Unfortunately, it looks like they didn’t put the muni article or photo on
the website. The table of contents just has:

“Potentially Huge The wheel world: Mountain unicyclers tackle everything
from the singletrack of British Columbia to the slopes of Mexican
volcanoes.”

Oh well, buy the magazine!
