Late night video idea

A Muni video ala Deliverance. No nothing about squealing like a pig. This is
pure “Dueling Banjos”. An old, tired idea? You bet, but take a look at
rec.juggling and see how many times the old “eating the apple while juggling”
is listed as an effective audience pleasing trick, while 5 club backcrosses can
be a snooze (unless its done with torches, of course).

The scenario is very simple: Kris Holm is out in Appalachia doing some Muni
(Kris, of course, must be played by someone else, since he is the most likely
choice to portray the backwater virtuoso). He comes across some kid on cheapo
looking unicycle also doing muni. (Of course a high quality Muni must be
disguised as a cheapo unicycle). The music starts and things build with the
soundtrack from a few simple jumps onto and from rocks, to riding down some
logs…ending with the two of them careening down the side of a mountain at
breakneck speed. Naturally, it must end with the Kris character falling in
frustration and admiration.

I think it is fair to say that clever and effective send offs of the “Dueling
Banjos” theme rarely fail to be crowd pleasers.

Well, there it is. Good night!

But it must be dueling violins.

No violence, please!

What we really need is a full parody of that song “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” I’m thinking of the Charlie Daniels version. I am not sure if he is the original author, I dont know too much about Charlie.

So, we need to get a band to-redo the music and make up new lyrics and record it, and make it all about unicycling, with the aforementioned duel taking in place along with the music / story.

That way, you’d have an intense skill demonstration and comedy bit all in one piece.

Alternately, just using the original song as-is would be almost as good.

We kind of already did this. Not exactly the same thing, but read on. At the
third MUni Weekend, in the Sacramento area in 1998, we had the usual
high-end MUni people we knew, such as Bruce Bundy, David Poznanter, George
Peck, etc. Then we had the usual few new people.

One of the new people, a guy who had never been to any form of unicycle
gathering before, started off the weekend by riding down a very steep bit of
non-trail off the side of the Stagecoach trail in Auburn. Others tried to
imitate him. Dan Heaton tried. Poznanter tried. But nobody could do it. It
got to a point where I had to force people into starting the next event
before someone got hurt.

The new guy had ridden down that nasty slope 2 or 3 times, but nobody else
ever made it. ‘Where does that guy practice?’ I wondered.

It kind of turns your dueling banjos idea around backward. The “new guy” at
MUni Weekend '98 was none other than Kris Holm!

Seth Golub also got a good angle of that hill, in his first shot on this

The 2002 California Mountain Unicycle Weekend is scheduled for September
20-22 (I’m pretty sure) in Santa Cruz. There is no Web site or solid data
yet, but stay tuned to this newsgroup or my Web site
(www.unicycling.com/muni/default.htm) for more information.

Re: Late night video idea

dig the idea!!

john drummond is the banjo paying unicycler, yeah?

u could even have a banjo duelling a violin and include some ‘home-grown’ musical talent as well

i can just see the initial smallish hops perfectly synched with the ‘plink, plink, plink’ of the opening strains of the song

someone’s gotta make this

Re: Re: Late night video idea

Wow, when I made this post I didn’t know of John D’s banjoing. This just gets better and better.
