Whether you are on @TeamNoPeel or @TeamPeel, debate why your side is better. I have a feeling this will get pretty heated… GO!
Are you Team No Peel (You keep the L/R stickers on) or Team Peel (Get rid of the L/R stickers)?
- Team No Peel
- Team Peel
Look what comes with my boxes of contact lenses. I can’t believe my fortune!
I might even resort to placing them on the arms of my favorite chair. Sitting in the chair correctly is not something a person wants to forget how to do.
so you stuck them on your lenses? At least people will know what your left and right eyes are.
Despite my hitherto adamant position on this matter I am actually a bit undecided what to vote. I do think the stickers look goofy, and I often peel them off my cranks since they are marked on the back anyways. However, I am no stranger to goofy and I kinda like riding around with L and R stickers although not needing them at all. If I do make a mistake, I would honestly make the mistake despite of the stickers anyways… Like when I am accidentally checking the right hand screwing rule with my left hand. So I asked a friend of me for advice.
It depends on your priorities: functionality vs. aesthetics.
Keep the L and R Stickers If:
- You frequently take the unicycle apart (for transport, maintenance, or storage) and want to quickly reassemble it correctly. -yes I do
- You’re new to unicycling and still rely on those indicators to mount consistently. -no I don’t
- The unicycle has asymmetrical components (like cranks with specific orientation or pedals with different threading), making the stickers functionally helpful. -well, quite obviously this is the main issue here
Peel Them Off If:
- You want a cleaner, sleeker look, and you know the orientation well enough without visual aids. -I know this well enough
- The stickers are faded, peeling, or clashing with the design. -SACRILEGE! I AM NEVER PEELING OFF THOSE VINTAGE STICKERS!!
- You’re experienced enough to distinguish left from right by feel or markings on the pedals/cranks themselves. -yes I am
Compromise Option:
Peel them off and use a small, discreet mark (like a dot or scratch on the inside of the crank arm) if you still want a reference without it being obvious.
So In conclusion, this places me quite firmly in the Team Peel camp, If I am allowed to keep my vintage stickers on my 29er for, well, aesthetical reasons.
So there I also cast my vote!
Also, I never teach other unicyclists to rely on the stickers as references. I always explain to them how to use the other visual meens, like
- the slit on the frame
- the L and R on the back of the cranks
- how the pedals are supposed to face if they are assymetrical
- keeping an eye on the threading (right hand rule for R side and left hand rule for L side).
My main reason for not peeling them off, is just because Im too lazy. As for aesthetics, they are so small that I don’t see them myself and they don’t annoy me, however worn the lettering is.
(This is a problem I often have with my boss at work. When I create userforms they just need to be functional for me, but he gets annoyed when group boxes are not aligned to the pixel.)
Only on the UW’s it is important to know which side is left and which right, because you’d have the bigger chance of unscrewing the pedals. Once my unicycles have been assembled, I know that the seat points the right way and I won’t touch that for many years, possible only when I run a flat.
Leaving the stickers on to me is a bit like walking around with the label sticking out of my pants…
I’ve done that too and then my boss told me in the office I hadn’t cut them all off
See!? Even if your boss is a pain (if he‘s not, then all the better), he‘s certainly right on this one.
You sissies are still using cranks?
And you are still being cranky
After I painted my UW and put the new pedals on I left the the wheel in the corridor a while. Then decided I should mark still which is left and which right. But I messed up. I thought I had the tape on the right, but yesterday with rolling, a pedal came off then when fastening, i noticed I had put the tape on the wrong side.
I personally am part of team peel.
My reasoning for this is that if I were to leave the stickers on, then they would just end up coming off themselves from rain/dirt/UPD’S/friction and so would just litter the trails (something which we should all avoid as much as possible) so taking them off myself just seems to make the most sense. Just my thoughts on the topic
they are just made of paper and would just rot away in no time. Also I still have the same stickers from 10 years ago when I bought the uni’s
