Juggling on a Uni

Ok here’s the deal: I’m currently level three on Uni skills, still learning, and i just barely learned to juggle. (as in I can get about ten catches using bags or balls) so i was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions about either juggling, juggling on a Uni, or any tips or anything about level three skills.

I just got a unicycle for christmas, so Im no expert, but ive hered that you need to learn to ride a unicycle with your arms crossed so you arnt using them for balance. This will help when you are juggling. You also might want to learn to juggle a little better. Try to juggle two balls in one hand, (with both hands) this will help you get better control over the balls when you are throwing them so you can stay better ballanced on your unicycle. Hope this helps.

Skills you need to master to juggle on a unicycle:

unicycle without flailing your arms around (crossing your arms while
riding is a good practice). As a rule, the better (more comfortable, more
stable, etc.) you are on a unicycle, the less effort is involved in
transfering a skill you can do while standing on your feet.

juggle while standing in one place (so you don’t have to be running after
the balls. If you’re still throwing the balls forward, but do this
consistently, you might be able to compensate by being a good unicyclist)

My philosophy when combinging skills is this. Once you think you’re ready
to try (this means before you’re quite ready to do), try. This should give
you an understanding of what skills are involved. Now, depending on your
learning and modivation style, either keep trying until you get it, or go
back to doing one thing at a time, concentrating on the part that makes it
hard to combine.

As for help with juggling, there are some tutorials and links on
www.juggling.org which might help with the learning.

For learning to ride and juggle, I think you are in a better position to
learn that than someone who can juggle, but is just starting to unicycle.
(Though, this is based on the experience of a friend who learned to juggle
9 balls a year and a half after he learned 3.)

Ok, and though this is probably a way’s off, I have to mention my
favorit trick – making an under-the-leg throw while juggling on a
unicycle. If you can juggle while idling, and if you can idle
one-footed, the trick is really easy to master. Just make a kick with
the up-foot, and throw the ball from the same side hand under that leg
before it returns to the pedal.

Hope some of that rambling was useful, jeff lutkus

  1. It’s easier initially to juggle whilst riding in a straight(-ish) line,
    rather than when idling.
  2. When idling I am TOLD it is easier to juggle on a giraffe.
  3. if your 10 ish catches are whilst NOT riding, maybe a bit more juggling
on the ground might help first: should not take too long to get stable
    with standard 3 ball cascade.

I find it quite astonishing what some guys can do with three balls. Naomi

Well I’m no expert at juggling on a unicylce but I am an expert at juggling. I suggest that you get a little better at juggling by practicing like there is an invisible box in front of you that you can’t go in front or behind and the tops of the balls hit the top. I recommend that you learn with bean bags, prefferably the klutz ones, until you can do at least 100 catches w/o worrying about it and then I bet you would be fine to start on a unicycle.

You need to be really good at both. Be able to juggle at least 100 throws.
Learn to juggle 4 balls, then backing down to three is easy. You must also
be able to unicycle with your arms crossed for a few blocks.

Juggling clubs is easier than balls because you can catch a club at any
point along the handle, to catch a ball you must be right on.

Safety is important! Be careful not to land on a juggling prop when you
dismount. Ride past the dropped prop before dismounting. I dismounted and
twisted my foot on a club and broke a bone.

Practice, practice, practice.

But what about the club? Hey, lets face it, props are expensive, and your HMO won’t cover a broken club… But if they did, would you have to buy a new one from the manufacturer they designate??? hmm…

Clubs are easier than balls??? Hmm I guess I must be doing it wrong, I
can do circles and tricks and stuff with balls, but barely manage 5 throws
with three clubs…Guess I better practice more…

In my opinion, which ever you are comfortable with is easier. I personally
use clubs more than balls, but I’m a better juggler with balls. It’s all
personal opinion. Same with for some people wheel walk is easier than hop
on wheel, and others it’s the other way around.

Just a self pat-on-the-back here. I have learned to juggle 3 balls and ride my unicycle at the same time.

I can ride about 50 feet before things fall apart. I did however, ride for several minutes with dropping the balls on the ground. I managed to catch them when things got out of balance.

I can juggle 3 clubs so that will be next on the uni.

Congrats, that’s terrific. If your club juggling is itself well controlled you shouldn’t have much trouble going from balls to them while unicycling.

Good luck.

riding forward while juggling isn’t that hard. if you can juggle 3 objects pretty solidly and unicycle in a straight line, with a little practice you can do it. idling and juggling is the hard part. at least for me right now. my suggestion is to get waaay better at juggling. then try it. i think clubs are much easier on the uni.

I agree that for juggling whilst idling giraffe is easier, although not much, i can ride all day while juggling but can’t do many throws while idling, i think it’s more down to getting better at idling so i have to move my arms very little than getting better at juggling, once you can do 3 balls/clubs for 5 mins i don’t see how you can get any better at that trick.

Monday night at the local juggling club I managed about 10 catches with three clubs while doing stand-up wheel walk. The weird thing is that I can’t seem to juggle while doing regular ww, probably because my legs get in the way a lot more than in stand-up ww.

OOPS. That should have said … ride for several minutes withOUT dropping the balls…

Actually, I will have to get waaay better at idling first.

. . . unless the clubs go end over end of course.
