Juggling- An olympic event

–part1_8d.705399c.283f2ad2_boundary

If I am not mistaken, I seem to remember reading something a long while
back (about 4 years ago) in Juggle magazine about club swinging in the
olympics. I think the article said that club swinging was an olympic event
way back in like the 1940’s or something like that. If it was once an
event, maybe it will be once again. Joel Heidtman wrote “The whole can of
worms regarding “is it an art or a sport” has again been opened, and again
there is discussion on whether or not juggling should bein the Olympics.”

Does anyone else know more about this? I am just kinda interested.

Indian Club Swinging was an Olympic event as part of the gymnastic
competition in 1904 (St. Louis), and 1932 (Los Angeles). Each time the
champion was an American. While it is extremely unlikely to return as an
Olympic event, it is not beyond the realm of possibility. The host
country can add a few events. They are often events the host country
feels confident they will win; they rarely return as events. In the past
these events were usually demonstration events; recently they have been
temporary medal events. Sometimes they are big winners - Triathlon was
added by the Aussies last year, and I think it will be a permanent
event. There are many strange events that have been discontinued: Rope
Climbing (1896, 1904, 1924, 1932), Tug-of-War (1904, 1908, 1912, 1920);
Roque (1904)

Unicycling has it’s best chance ever of being in the Olympics if Beijing
wins it’s bid to be the host city of the 2008 games. Chinese Olympic
officials have informally indicated that they would be interested in
having unicycle racing in the Games. I assume this is based on their
domination of the racing in Unicon X.

All of this is a very long shot, at best. The first hurdle will be this
July when the IOC awards the 2008 Games.

Club swinging in the olympics is a branch of rhythmic gymnastics. Rhythmic
gymnasts use a number of different apparatus including: ball, hoop,
ribbon, rope, clubs

The clubs are different from standard juggling clubs For a picture see
http://www.rsg.net/cgi-bin/show?information/clubs.html

I don’t know much about competitive rhythmic gymnastics but I belive
competitiors use 4 different aparatus in turn and their score over the 4
events is totaled. As far as I am aware clubs all still used in the
Olympics. I know they were in 1996.

I have been thinking about experimenting with gymnastic aparatus while on
a unicyle. Has any one played around with a hoop? I’ve done a bit with
balls and clubs. Ribbons look really nice too.
