OK, this is getting too weird. We all know that a lot of computer people
seem to be interested in juggling/unicycling but there seem to be way
too many people who speak Japanese.

So, who here has studied Japanese (as a foreign language)?

Yes, Jack, we know about you. There’s also Danny, Mr Aardvark, me, and
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen lots of occasional "arigato"s and "tanjoubi"s
from other quarters.

Interesting that LP’s juggling code doesn’t use the letter “j”. He’s
obviously reserving it to record the ability to speak Japanese.

Mark.

i did not formally study nihongo, i formally studied the urasenke tea ceremony. so i have a bit of formal 15th century japanese lodged in my brain & am currently working at a japanese resturant so by default i am picking up current usage & slang, neh?

Re: Japanese was Re: uni nicknames

I studied Japanese back in school then ended up living and working there for
over 3 years ('89-'92). My wife and I cycle-toured the country for 7 months
during that stay, but on two wheels each.

I have a Japanese car, truck, watch, several antique swords, and used to have a Japanese unicycle. I know roughly where Japan is located. I have met and spoken with Japanese people. I had a Japanese ESL student stay in my home for a summer. I have seen a Japanese movie.

I’m kind of partial to Korean because when I accidently bump into one of the 110 people with the last name Kim, or 107 people with the last name Lee* in my school, they all exclaim “Ha-chi-maa”(sp?) Thats about the extent of my knowledge of Asian languages.

  • these numbers are not made up or exagerated, they are the current amounts of students with that name attending Benjamin N. Cardozo H.S. this term. I work in the program office, and when I was bored, I counted the most common names in the school, and these are them.

Re: Japanese was Re: uni nicknames

I was born in Japan and lived there for 15 years. I wonder if that makes
it a foreign language. I guess so, since I’m American.

I’ve noticed that a lot of jugglers and unicyclists seem to have martial
arts experience. Since students of the Japanese arts tend to refer to the
moves by their Japanese names, they inevitably learn some Japanese and are
often moved to learn more.

Between the ages of 18 and 20 (when I injured my back), I studied judo and
aikido (I keep meaning to take aikido up again now that my back is pretty
much recovered). I also studied karate for a few months. I was interested
in the Japanese language before that, but I would probably never have got
round to learning any if I hadn’t studied martial arts.

I’ve forwarded the suggestion to him

Thanks all for the feedback.

Not sure if it shows a higher than average number of Japanese speakers
here - it certainly shows that people end up learning a foreign language
for all kinds of different reasons though.

Cheers,
Mark.
