Is unicycling a hipster activity?

On last night’s “The Simpsons,” which was about hipsters taking over Springfield, two scenes featured unicycles (there was also a scene with a penny farthing).

I asked my wife, and she assured me I’m not a hipster. But I am “special.” Woo-hoo! (Note to self: Don’t wear bowling shoes while unicycling.)

So who here is a hipster?

Interesting point:)

I am not a hipster.
I am not interessed in Fashion and funny hats.

My wife tells me I am a Nerd.

Maybe they were going for the “non-mainstream” definition of hipster. So if you took up unicycling specifically to be different maybe you’ve taken your first step toward being hipster?

That said… I think a hipster would ride a fixie.

Well a uni IS a fixie minus a wheel…and handlebars…and cool silver watches and rolled up jeans.
I dunno if it’s “hipster” or not, but I could see the similarities.

Yeah a uni is a fixie, but the two wheeled version requires much less effort. I mean it’s just an image thing, right? Why go to all that trouble when you can just hop on a bike and ride immediately.

Mine too!

I’ll second that! Fixies are big rage around here, and those who ride them are (for the most part) very fashionable.

Unicyclist tend to be very independent and dress however they feel without care of what others may think.

In the first scene, the unicycle rider was Sideshow Mel (basically a clown), who was following the hipsters on a bike ride. So it wasn’t a direct swipe at unicycling. In the second scene, two unicyclists were in the background; they weren’t regular characters, so I assume they were part of the invading horde of hipsters.

Truthfully, I’d much rather be called a clown than a hipster. I frequently hear the word “clown” while riding around town (always by children). Thankfully, I’ve yet to hear “hipster.” So maybe it’s not a hipster activity.

Nope, definitely not hipster:

  1. It’s too hard to learn
  2. It requires patience which is not a typical attribute of youth
  3. It’s to active, hipsters are more about appearance than action
  4. I do it, and I am clearly not hip

A more typical hipster ride would be a fixy road bike, an eclectic mismatch of bike parts, an electric bike/scooter, etc…

Plus, unicycles are like so yesterday

Agree. I have both a fixie and a uni. I guess I don’t care if I’m a hipster or a clown. My fixie is easier to lock up and walk away from, faster, plus it was cheaper, so if it gets heisted I really won’t cry about it.
Uni does take some dedication, so I guess if hipsters are lazy by definition(are they? I haven’t heard) then no, uni is not hipster.

I don’t have a film camera (I’m told that’s a hipster thing) or a fixie, but I wear hats but that’s cause my head is shaved. I don’t consider myself a ‘hipster’.

Personally, I prefer to be referred to as “eccentric.”

“I’m dreaming of a hipster Christmas,
just like the ones you’ve never heard of”

I ride fixies does that make me a hipster? hmmm… i got it.

Incorrect

I watched it and not only was Mel riding, when the showed a montage of the hipster town, they showed the school that was “cool”. There were lots of kids riding unicycles around in the gym like I imagine they do in Japan.
