Is this normal for this age?

I am using Google Translate, so please excuse any mistakes.

I am 13 years old and have been unicycling for 1.8 years. I can ride forward, backward, idle (stand in one place), and juggle while riding. Is this a normal progress for this age and time?

Hi Mark, welcome.
I’m new to unicycling, been at it for about six months. I can ride forwards but not backwards. I can idle, but not well. I can also juggle, but I can’t juggle and ride. I do know that progress feels slow some times, but keep practicing, don’t get discouraged. I’d also suggest that you have a list of what you’d like to be able to do, and when practicing something gets frustrating, practice a different thing instead.

Not everyone learns tricks the same way or at the same rate. You’ll likely learn some things very quickly, and others may take you a while. Always have several things to work on.

Welcome, and keep at it!

Welcome! I am happy there is someone else close to my age here on the forum. Those skills are impressive for riding less than two years. Definitely don’t worry about being behind in skills, that’s far ahead of me. I have now been riding for 3.5 years, and I don’t know how to juggle, can inconsistently ride backwards a little bit and sometimes idle for about 10 rotations. I’m curious, what unicycle(s) do you use?

I don’t actually know what unicycle it is. Unicycling is a school subject here, so I just use the unicycle provided by my school

Tanks!

Sounds pretty good. Progress after about age 8 is mostly a function of how often you ride and if you have better riders to show you new tricks and give tips. Riding on your own takes more dedication and helps to watch videos.

Work on hopping, seat-in-front (riding/hopping), then 1-ft riding/idling and wheel walk. Wheel walk is usually the first skill that really take lots of time. Then drag seat takes lots of practice…

Ride for the enjoyment of it. Take inspiration from seeing what others can do, but don’t feel bad if you cant yet. As other have said, we all learn at different rates. The only one to compare against is yourself. If you are progressing that is fantastic. ¿Not progressing as quick as you want? Patience and continued practice. You are young enough that you’ll learn it quicker than older folks.

Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you.

I’ve been riding 10 years and I cannot ride backwards, or idle or juggle. But they are not skills I need. I just like the feel of going short distances for a few hours whenever I can.
Just set some goals you want to achieve and go for it. Even though some of these take time it feels good when you finally nail them. It took me 3 weeks to learn to ride and another week to learn to free-mount and since then I’ve been addicted to riding unicycle.

You must really love riding the unicycle. I love your enthusiasm

I just don’t have the time to learn. Otherwise, I think it would go much faster

Okay, thanks! I am dedicated… but unfortunately, I don’t have the time

Another way to think about it. The age range of people here is pretty wide (say, 10 to 100). As young as you are, you could stop riding unicycle for 40 years and still be ahead of me. I think that riding and juggling at the same time is amazing. You have to enjoy some of what you’ve learned in order to be able to learn even harder, more frustrating things in the future!
