Hello All Tried playing my guitar on the uni last night - with slight
success and it got me wondering - what else has been played on a unicycle?

Thanks

Joe Munatic extroadinaire

I’m fairly sure you will be able to find a picture of Kris Holm playing the violin on a unicycle, at which I understand he is also quite proficient. I have played a harmonica which is pretty easy to do and my goal is to play a Wurlitzer pipe organ while riding. The logistics of towing the pipe set have not yet been worked out.

In fact here is a direct link to the OOW cover featuring such a picture.

I’ve played an accordion (piano style accordion) but I’ll never admit it
publicly.

I seem to remember someone talking about playing the cello while riding-
perhaps by attaching a short cord with a cup on the end to the seatpost to
hold the “spike” at the bottom of the cello body (whatever it’s called).

It would be cool to see someone play the cello while riding a Coker!

Yeah but can you imagine faceplanting while you’ve got that thing.

$5000plus down the drain! :frowning:

A picture of someone playing a sousaphone on a uni was in the Nov 2001
issue of National Geographic Magazine (around page 10). Some kind soul in
this ng scanned it and put it online but I can’t find the url.

hey I have played my didgeridoo on my uinicycle. It is harder to circular
breathe and my knee hits the didge sometimes when idling. My arm also gets
tired from holding my very heavy didgeridoo

The closest we come is my boys have practiced their piano while perched on
their uni. I haven’t tried guitar on mine but would be concerned about a
UPD with expensive guitar in hand.

Funny to read this posting…

I was involved in the filming of a music video two days ago and I was
asked to play a flying V guitar while riding my unicycle. The video was
for a Vancouver based guy named Jordie Birch. The video should be out in a
couple of weeks. I will post another message when I have seen the video
and let you know how it turned out. It should be a fun video to watch. The
song is called Mullah Mullah. As in money. Lots of crazy things going on
in the video.

Hi Klaas… that kind soul was me. And I’m back!

Pictures:

  1. National Geographic (sousaphone)

  1. Ian McKellar (sousaphone-based one man band atop giraffe).

I personally have experimented with sousaphone* (just on the 20" regular
uni), also trombone, ukulele… not all at once, of course. The irony is,
that although the sousaphone is by far the most impressive ‘statement’, it
is also easier (for me) than the other instruments I’ve tried (on the
uni). I’ve never performed in public in this way, but one day I’d like to,
when the right opportunity presents itself.

I suspect (and indeed know, in Ian’s case) that I am a lesser unicycle
rider than the two depicted in the links about, but I know I’m a better
sousaphone player… it’s what I do for a profession.

  • (a.k.a. Marching Tuba, but sousaphone is definitely the correct term).

I’ve played many instruments on my uni. Music is one of my biggest hobbies so it works out pretty well.
Here are the instruments:

electric gutar (gibson Les Paul Studio Custom)
Accustic gutar (Global)
Classical gutar (La Patra(?))
22 string celtic harp
lap harp
harmonica
bongoes
many(I think about 40) different native american flutes
Ocrana(?)

I believe that I have forgotton a couple, but that’s the just of it.

Avery

Wow, I thought i was the only one who has tried this. I have played my Bass guitar (Dean edge4), my regular guitar (B.C. Rich warlock) and my alto sax (selmer) on the uni. For all of the instruments, i hat to make the straps REALLY short to prevent my knees from hitting the instrument.

I’ve seen accordian and guitar palyed on one wheel and know of a bagpipe
player who claims to be able to ride and play at the same time.

Oh, and Miark plays penny whistle at odd moments, sometimes on one wheel.

You’ll need more air, so try also focusing on breathing out through your
nose too instead of only breathing in through your nose

And check e.g. the didjeribone from Charlie McMahon (you might want to fix
the two sliding parts somehow) or build your own plastic didge. Then the
weight is much less (unless you want to exercise weight-lifting
simultaneously  )

The way of breathing is supposed to be quite ok thoug for sporters
(according to a chapter of a book I once read, see also the CD & book list
on my site)

Cheers, Roland http://www.didgeweb.com/

Kris and I exchanged posts about forming a string quartet (or duet) on
uni. He plays classical violin and I have played cello since I was 6. We
came up with some cool ideas to help with the pin and the general
bulkiness of the cello. If I come across a cheap cello someone is
chucking, I may give it a go – but not with my own cello!

I have played guitar and banjo (4-string, which has the same strings as a
cello so it was easy to learn) and kazoo on uni. My brother is an
excellent pianist and picked up a melodion (a sort of blown piano) just
for the purpose of playing while riding. We made an interesting pair when
we did this as teens.

I have never tried playing the cello on uni, but I once rode 4mi with it
in the case from a train stop to my mom’s house. She wasn’t too thrilled.

For this wild and crazy party gurlz web site go to:

She is quite a gal but you don’t hear from her on this NG… I think she’s
too busy getting naked and partying.

I wish she’d respond to my ‘doin’ it on a uni’ thread though.
