I’m building one tomrow… I’m using 2"x50" PVC pipe.
I’m not using the bees wax method because I dont want my hands to get dirty and gritty. I’ll be using tape :). I intend to make it warp at a few angles. Does anyone know if this will affect the sound of the didgeridoo?
I will not be making a photo tutorial due the the simpleness(Is that even a word?) of this project, But if someone wants, I’ll post a written tutorial about the process. Thanks!
I made one a while ago with bees wax and it was fun.
however, after playing on a friend’s traditional wooden didgeridooooooo, I came to the conclusion that PVC is not optimal didgeridoooooooo material.
Still pretty fun though.
That’s impressive.
If you want to learn to play, you’ve got to learn to do circular breathing.
Start practising with a straw in a glass of water.
Blow bubbles.
At some point, take over bubble-blowing-duties with air trapped in your cheeks as opposed to blowig from your chest/stomach.
While blowing from your cheeks, breathe in thru your nose.
I borrowed my sister’s didgeriddo a while ago and learned to play it. I can get a pretty good sound from it, but when circular breathing and playing, it makes a weird noise…like a wet fart.
Relaxing your lips is pretty much the most important thing.
You’re not trying to create an embouchure like trumpeters do (altho, if you can, it does allow you to make some very interesting sounds in addition to the more ‘traditional’ didgeridoo sounds.
You’ll ‘hear’ when the sound you make slips into the “home pitch” of the pipe.
Once you have that, and can maintain it thru the circular breathing (the secret here is an old friend - PRACTISE), you can start setting out to make other mouth noises and see how that influences teh sound of the pipe.
Humming is normally the first one.
Hum a note while blowing the didgeridoo.
By slightly changing the pitch at which you hum, you can set up varying interference patterns with the didgeridoo’s sound.
You can change the sound by changing the shape of your mouth.
Force your mouth into a wide smile while blowing, suck your cheeks in and raise the roof of your mouth while blowing.
Experiment, experiment, experiment.
Hang out with your beat-boxing buddies and pick up some tricks from them.
That seems to me to be what that chap in the earlier video is doing.
And it does verily rock.
Watching your video it’s clear that you’re on your way.
Just keep practising and remember that making your own musical instrument and learning how to play it could be one of the kewlest things anybody can ever do.
