Huni-Rex

Has anyone ever heard of a Huni-Rex unicycle? Apparently it is a G26 without a Schlumpf hub, or other geared hubs, but instead has a giraffe type hub with a short chain to make it geared.

Here is the website:

Using the search function you’ll find it mentioned in several threads.

Yeah, i’ve ridden one years back. I’m not sure if they are still made though.

This was my comment on it from 2014

How much do these cost?

They are no longer made. Someone was selling the remaining stock a few years ago, I believe they were made in Hungry, good luck finding one.

Looks like they are still selling them, here.

These are really heavy, with increased chance of pedal strike and they are still fixed gear. You can’t change gears. You can basically achieve much of the same with shorter cranks. Why have chains and more machinery to maintain than on a regular uni? The only thing you get with a Huni-Rex is lower cadence on a smaller wheel.

There is a reason why these went out of production.

Are you sure production has stopped? I get the impression that production is continuing and that sales are being made directly on Facebook. It’s been going on for years. It seems to me that chain tensioners are now fitted to the Huni-Rex, whereas this wasn’t the case a few years ago.

I’m lucky enough to have a Schlumpf, but for someone who doesn’t, this is a way to try out the Schlumpf at a lower cost. For me, it has nothing to do with riding with short cranks. I have long been convinced that short cranks do not allow you to use all the strength you have in your quadriceps. When the road climbs or the gear ratio is higher, pedaling is no longer just about how fast you can turn your legs.

The Huni-Rex has plenty of flaws, and if I had to choose between a Huni-Rex and an ungeared 36“ (with a carbon rim), I would choose the latter. But the Huni-Rex costs 10 times less than a high-end 36”.

No, the original Huni-Rex company went out of business

. However, a smaller “family business” is selling off the remaining stock of the unique geared unicycles through a limited, personal ordering process.

What you should know:

  • The original company is gone. The start-up that originally produced the Huni-Rex was not prepared for the economic crisis in Hungary and has since closed.

  • A remnant stock is available. A small group is managing the remnant supply of Huni-Rex unicycles, selling them through direct messages on their Facebook community.

  • Ordering is personal. To place an order, you must contact them on Facebook to arrange shipping and payment details. They do not operate a standard e-commerce website.

  • Stock is limited. This is a one-time sell-off, and the unicycles will only be available while the remaining supply lasts.

Get one while you can .

I am not able to view anything on facebook due to my schools restrictions. How much does it cost?

The page is initially locked. You’d need to send a message to join. I dont intend to buy one. Dont you have internet at home? Or a smart phone? Or parents that can check for you? My kid would never ask coz whenever something is difficult she loses interest. She is 12.

I think the Huni-rex is sold for €100 + shipping.

Even if I don’t need it, every time the low price makes me hesitate… (my garage is big enough to accommodate n+1 unicycles  )

For someone who likes to tinker, it’s not bad. Yes, you have to be careful when cornering, the chain tension needs to be monitored, the q-factor is huge… But at this price, the curious are generally not disappointed.

I think I’ll get it. This is a nice way to try out geared unicycles for a very low price, when I never would’ve gotten the super expensive Schlumpf. However, as I am now in the process of building my own uni and I just spent ~$250 on parts, so I think my parents would heavily lecture me if I spent another ~$150 so soon. Maybe I’ll wait a month.

They are being made in 26” wheel configuration. They are doing direct marketing on facebook

Don’t you have a problem with high import rates from Europe coz of dear Mr Trump? You’d prolly also have that with a schlumpf hub.

I haven’t had problems buying from people on the forum and Mad4One in terms of tariffs.

I don’t have a Facebook account but I have a friend who is trying to buy one for me, hopefully we can purchase one with delivery to the UK :crossed_fingers:

I tried a huni-rex last year. It definitely felt weird and took ~20mins before I was successful mounting it. The cranks are indeed lower and I had a pedal strike, or several, while turning and trying it out. The gearing left me with a trippy feeling being so “low” to the ground yet going fast with a low pedal rotation cadence. I would pick one up for my collection if one were available at a decent price. u+1 if always a good thing, despite what my wife says.

I think it’s a pretty decent price. Only 99 euros, much cheaper than any unicycle worth getting

Mine has come in at ÂŁ187 for the unicycle, chain tensioners that are recommended for riders over 75kg I think it was and UK delivery.

I’m fully expecting it to be a strange thing to ride but just getting it for the novelty factor really.
