Hey, I was wondering what the best way to rip a DVD to wmv or mpg or avi.
I’ve used some programs that work but have poor video quality or you have to pay for. I want to put DVD’s onto my portable media center. I put U2 and Spaced out on, but the program made a jerky video. Thanks for any help.
In what way is the video jerky? One problem with converting from TV video to computer video is interlacing. TV video is interlaced. Computers do progressive (non-interlaced) video. Interlaced video on a computer will look jerky.
Read up here for some info on interlacing: What is Deinterlacing? Facts, solutions, examples. There are some examples there of what interlaced video looks like on a computer. Is that what you’re seeing as jerky video?
By jerky i mean it looks like it pauses skips some frames and plays like every 5 seconds, the aduio does not skip though.
I used “ImTOO DVD ripper”
I don’t know. I generally use TMPGEnc 3 XPress for transcoding from MPEG-2 to other formats. It’s commercial with a trial period. The price has gone up since I bought it. It has worked OK for me but there are other options available now.
Could the software be trying to encode the video at a very high bitrate? Very high bitrates at high frame rates can cause the computer to lag if there are other processes going on or if your computer is on the slow side. Try encoding to a lower quality and see what happens.
Here’s some ripping guides that may give you some alternatives:

Or it may be that you need to record at a higher bit rate. I use DVD ripper and it has worked very well. Some of my films are jerky but I think that’s due to the SD card being a bit slow or because I’ve recorded them at too low a bitrate.
