Now dont make jokes about going to the toilet!
Last Saturday I had a strong urge to take the 36” for a spin. Just 6km, because I dont feel superstable on it. But it was quite windy. The way back was quite a fight, but I managed then today it was dry and 11 degrees Celsius, so went again. At first I had the wind in the back which went great, but on the way back I blew off. The windspeed was 30kph.
It was very hard work and after 1 km my legs gave out. I could barely run out of it. I walked the rest of it back to the car, also because I find freemounting the 36er very hard.
Are there any tricks of handling strong winds. I felt I was hanging forward a lot which also required me to pedal faster. Sidewinds make ot feel like riding with camber
It’s been fairly windy here lately, so I can relate.
Riding on a windy day is usually more “emotionally charged” than a day with little to no wind for me. When I get a nice tailwind I feel like the unicycle equivalent of Lance Armstrong; when it turns into a strong/gusty headwind I cry a little on the inside
Then you get sidewinds that threaten to knock you off the uni if they’re strong enough. Not exactly something you want happening at speed!
If I feel like riding on a particularly windy day, usually I opt for a smaller wheel. It’s easier for me to charge into a headwind on a 26" compared to a 36". If you’re already riding and don’t have the option of a smaller wheel, with headwinds I just accept my fate and grind away at a lower speed. If I’m dealing with prolonged sidewinds, I do my best to keep things going straight. If I’m too bent out of shape by the wind though I take breaks occasionally.
